Sanjay Jog was a popular Indian actor who is best known for playing the role of âBharatâ in Ramanand Sagar âs epic television series Ramayan.
Sanjay Jog is also known for his work in Marathi cinema.
He belonged to a middle-class Marathi-speaking family.
He spent most of his childhood in Pune and Nagpur.
After his schooling from Nagpur, he went to Bombay (now Mumbai) for further studies, where he got himself enrolled in Elphinston College and pursued B.Sc.
After completing his B.Sc. from Elphinston College, he did a course in acting from Filmalaya Studio in Mumbai. Meanwhile, he got an offer to work in a Marathi film âSaplaâ (1976) alongside Anupama who was the leading lady and Ramesh Deo who was playing as a villain in the film.
His debut film âSaplaâ was a disaster at the box office, and it made Sanjay so depressed that he returned to his hometown Nagpur.
When he came back to Mumbai for some farming-related work, he got an offer to work in another Marathi film titled âJidd.â It was a multi-starrer film with every possible famous name in Marathi Cinema in its cast. The film was a hit at the box office; establishing Sanjay Jog as a skilled actor in the industry.

After Jidd, he did about 30 Marathi films, such as Gondhalat Gondhal, Maay Baap, Khara Kadhi Sangu Naye, Dista Tasa Nasta, Navri Mile Navryala, and Sage Soyre.
Apart from Marathi films, he also did some Gujarati films, including Dikri Chali Sasariye (1985) in which he played an anti-hero. The film was very successful at the box office.

He made his Hindi debut with the film Apna Ghar (1989). His other Hindi films include Jigarwala (1991), Humshakal (1992), Naseebwala (1992), and Beta Ho To Aisa (1994).

It was Ramanand Sagar âs Ramayan (1987) that made him a household name. His portrayal of Bharat (Lord Ramaâs brother) was so intense that people often cried in front of their television sets. While talking about how he landed with the role of Bharat, he said,
I played the role of Abhimanyu in a Gujarati Film called âMaya Bazar.â Gopal Dada was the makeup man of this film. He was also handling the make-up department for Ramayan. He suggested that I should meet Papaji (Ramanand Sagar). Later, on meeting Papaji, he put in a good word for me. Papaji had also seen my pictures in Abhimanyuâs getup.â

Sanjay Jog gave many hits in his career, including five golden jubilees and two diamond jubilees.
Before getting the role of Bharat in Ramayan, he had been offered the role of Laxman; however, he decided to go for Bharatâs role. While explaining about it, he said,
Lakshmanâs character is important for its length. Also among all the brothers he is always remembered for the ideal Ram-Lakshman pairing. But people tend to forget that when it comes to duty and sacrifice for a brother, the pair of Ram-Bharat is remembered. No doubt if I had enacted the role of Lakshman I would have got more screen time but then I would have missed on the opportunity of working in the sensitive scenes as Bharat.â
Sanjay Jog was a hardcore religious person and described himself as âsuper-superstitious.â
Although he was good in English and Hindi, he was also well versed in Punjabi and Gujarati.
In his leisure time, he loved to do farming and had even bought a piece of land in Pune. While talking about it, he said,
I have a Poultry farm and some land in Pune. While taking care of them, I wish to continue doing films in whatever good work I am offered.â
He never let his stardom to overcome his lifestyle, and he always maintained a down-to-earth persona in his life. In an interview, he said,
I still eat the same food, smoke, drink and meet my friends. I donât believe in giving âmessagesâ for my fans. Iâm just a normal human being, no supernatural.â
