Some Lesser Known Facts About Samaresh Majumdar
Samaresh Majumdar was an Indian novelist who authored numerous Bengali books such as Jutay Rakter Daag (1989), Din Jay Rat Jay (1993), and Agniratha (2000). He was catapulted to the limelight after he penned three books, Uttoradhikar (The Inheritance), Kalbela, and Kalpurush (A Man of Our Time), in the Animesh Series, a political quartet, between 1979 to 1989.
Samaresh belonged to a Hindu Bengali family in West Bengal and spent his childhood in the tea gardens of Duars in Jalpaiguri.

After completing his formal education, he began working in the Income Tax Department of West Bengal; however, his stint in the IT Department was short as he left it to pursue a career in writing.
Samaresh published an article in 1967 for a prominent Bengali magazine Desh; the article was later revamped into a play.
Samaresh took a keen interest in acting, and he acted in several plays during his college days. He also worked as a director and scriptwriter for several stage shows and plays.
His 1967 novel Dour (Run) was published in the 1976 issue of Desh.
Samaresh penned three books in the Amritesh series between 1979 and 1989. The books Uttoradhikar, Kalbela (1981), and Kalpurush depicted the rise of Naxalism in West Bengal in the 1960s and the 1970s. Director Goutam Ghose made a Bengali movie, Kaalbela, adapted from the book Kalbela in 2009.

In 1983, he created the fictional sleuth character named Arjun and published Khutimari Range; Khutimari was the first book published in the Arjun series. By 2023, Samaresh had written more than thirty books on Arjun including Kalimpong e Sitaharan, Chandigarh e Gandogol, Arjun Samagra (1-6), and Arjun Ebang Chinese Cigarette.

In 2013, he penned the fourth book in the Amritesh series titled Mousholkal.
The 2014 Bengali film Buno Haansh was adapted from Samaresh’s book Buno Haansh.
Dipaboli, a character from his book Saatkahon gained popularity among the readers.

By 2023, Samaresh had published more than 200 novels in the Bengali language. Some of his notable works include Lokkhir Pachali, Showar, Haramir Hatbaksho, Ora Ebong Oder Maera, Buker Bhetor Bangladesh, Panchti Rahasya Upanyas, Bondinibash, and Kosto Kosto Sukh.

On the evening of 8 May 2023, Samaresh Majumdar took his last breath in the Apollo Hospital in Kolkata, where he was admitted by his family on 25 April 2023 after he suffered from bulbar palsy, i.e., a form of speech and swallowing impairment, caused because of a brain haemorrhage due to internal bleeding in his brain. His condition further deteriorated after he faced breathing issues due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with which he was diagnosed more than twelve years ago. The doctors later placed him on a ventilator in an attempt to revive him. My father is no more. He left us in the evening. His condition has improved a lot in the last two or three days. We were also very optimistic. But today he had a major cardiac attack. He did not return from there. Father’s body will be kept for a while tomorrow morning at Shyampukur’s house. After that, it will be taken to Balighat for the last rites.”
