  • Sadashiv Amrapurkar was a versatile Indian actor best known for playing villainous roles.

  • Sadashiv was always into acting and did many plays in school and college. Sadashiv in his young days was also trained as a singer, but he was told that his highly nasal baritone would prevent him from being a successful singer. That made him quit singing and focus on theatre.

  • Sadashiv Amrapurkar had played first-class cricket in the Ranji Trophy. He was an excellent batsman and a leg spinner, but when he participated in a one-act play competition in his college, he found his calling, and it turned his direction from cricket to acting and directing plays.

  • At the age of 21, he started doing theatre and did more than 50 plays (acting and directing) and minor roles in Marathi films till 1979. Producer Govind Nihalani spotted Sadashiv during a Marathi play titled ‘Hands Up’ in 1981, and soon, he offered him the role of Rama Shetty (the negative lead) in his movie ‘Ardh Satya.’  The movie turned out to be a hit, and Sadashiv received critical acclaim for his performance in the film

  • The 1987 Bollywood film ‘Hukumat’ helped Sadashiv garner popularity as a villain in Hindi cinema. The movie was a hit (did more business at the box office than Mr. India), and Dharmendra even considered Amrapurkar to be his lucky mascot. After Hukumat, they went on to do several films together. 

  • Sadashiv won the Filmfare award for Best Actor in a negative role (1992) for his role of ‘Maharani’ in the movie ‘Sadak.’ It was the first year that a Filmfare was given in this category, and Amrapurkar was the first recipient of this award.

  • He was the favourite villain of the 1980s, but around the mid-90s, he started doing comic roles in movies like ‘Ishq (1997),’ ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999),’ ‘Coolie No 1 (1999),’ ‘Aunty No 1 (1998),’ and many more. 

  • The actor did more than 300 films in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Oriya, and Haryanvi.

  • Sadashiv once mentioned that he signed the film ‘Elaan-E-Jung’ just because it gave him an opportunity to ride a horse, which he had never experienced in his life; however, he fell from the horse on the first day of the shoot and was later seen driving a jeep in the film. 

  • Even after becoming a successful Bollywood actor, he never stopped doing theatre. In an interview, when he was asked to choose between films and theatre, he opted theatre and said that theatre was his breath. Once, he shared a story from his young days when his father, who was not happy with his son’s passion for acting, locked him in the house to stop him from acting in a play, but later, after seeing his passion for acting, his father let him pursue his dream.

  • Sadashiv was a philanthropist and social activist. He worked for the betterment of rural youth. He was associated with many social organizations like Samajik Krutadnyata Nidhi, Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti, Snehalaya, Lokshahi Prabodhan Vyaspeeth, Ahmednagar Aitihasik Vastu Sangrahalaya, and many others.

  • The silver screen missed Amrapurkar for a long time until he appeared in Dibakar Banerjee’s film ‘Bombay Talkies’ in 2012 in which he did a cameo. The film was made to celebrate the centenary year of Indian cinema. When asked about his hiatus from Bollywood, he said,

    “Why should I? I’ve never said that I’m retired or don’t want to do films anymore. Just that the roles that come to me are often repetitive in nature and I’m brave enough to refuse them. Earlier, when I started my career at the age of 32, I wanted to do films to get recognized. Once I established myself as an actor, it was about making money for family. But now things are different. As you grow older, your priorities change.”

  • Think Global Foundation in Ahmednagar conceptualized an award titled ‘Late Sadashiv Amarapurkar Award’ in memory of the actor.

  • When he died of a lung infection on 3 November 2014, his demise was condoled by many influential people from all walks of life. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his condolences to the late actor.
