Controversy Arrested on Corruption and Disproportionate Assets Charges: In June 2023, Sachin Sawant was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on charges of corruption and amassing wealth beyond his declared income. Sawant, while acting as the Deputy Director of ED's Mumbai Zone 2 unit, had conducted an investigation into a diamond trading company accused of illegal financial transactions exceeding Rs. 500 crores; however, an individual implicated in the case accused Sawant of bribery. Subsequent investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) revealed that Sawant had amassed considerable assets under his name and those of his immediate family - his wife, mother, and father - during his tenure as Deputy Director. The total value of these assets was reported to be Rs. 2.45 crore, significantly higher than what could be justified by their legitimate income. Moreover, it was suspected that Sawant also owned a BMW and another vehicle through proxy owners. To trace the supposed illicit money flow, the ED also got involved in the investigation. Following his arrest in Lucknow, Sawant was relocated to Mumbai, and the ED carried out searches at his properties in both cities.
