Roy Black grew up in New York City. His parents divorced soon after his birth.
Roy’s custody was granted to his mother. Later, she remarried in 1951 to a British automotive executive, who relocated the family to Connecticut and then to Jamaica.
He spent much of his youth in Jamaica, where he attended Jamaica College, one of the most prestigious British-style schools in America.
While attending the University of Miami, Black was a member of the Zeta Epsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega, a social fraternity in the United States.
After his graduation, he appeared on the Florida Bar Exam in 1970 and received the highest possible score
As a lawyer, he started working as an assistant public defender in a law firm in 1971.
Since 1973, he had been working at the University of Miami as an adjunct professor in criminal evidence.
Roy worked as a public defender in Miami-Dade County before he transitioned to private practice. During his five years as a public defender, he represented hundreds of poor defendants who could not afford private lawyers.
Roy Black was the founding partner of a law firm named Black Srebnick.
He was a member of the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame of the USA.
Black gained national recognition after winning an acquittal in the highly publicised 1991 William Kennedy Smith rape trial. Soon after this trial, he became the first choice for various celebrities for their legal matters.
His second wife, Lea Black, was a juror on that trial. They began dating after that and married in 1994. In 2012, they opened up their marriage publicly.

Roy defended Miami police officer William Lozano, successfully winning an acquittal for him during a highly publicised retrial in 1992. In 1989, Lozano had shot Clement Lloyd, which had sparked the riots in Miami. However, after his conviction was overturned on appeal, he was acquitted in a retrial in 1993.
In 2008, he defended famous race car driver HĂ©lio Castroneves and his sister, securing their acquittal on charges of income tax evasion.
Roy Black won the only acquittal at trial in the well-known Varsity Blues college admissions scandal (2011). His client was Amin Khoury, who was acquitted.
Since 1987, Roy had been included every year among The Best Lawyers in America.
Chambers USA once described Roy as a leading litigator with “the best national reputation in the State of Florida” and “known for his skill and consistently practising at that standard.” Chambers also stated that,

Roy had served as NBC’s legal analyst on “The Today Show” and frequently appears on ABC’s “Good Morning America” as well as other network and cable news programs.
In 2011, his wife, Lea Black, joined the cast of the Bravo reality television series for the first season and appeared in all three seasons. Roy, along with his family, had also been featured on the show throughout.
He had also written a book titled Black’s Law, a book that recounts the strategies he employed to safeguard the freedom of his four reputed clients.

Among the other celebrities represented by Black are financier Jeffrey Epstein, for whom he played a role in the legal defence during Epstein’s 2006 Florida criminal case involving charges of soliciting prostitution from underage girls. Additionally, Black represented pop musician Justin Bieber, who faced allegations of drag racing and driving under the influence in 2014.
Black was informally known by the nickname “The Professor” due to his courtroom strategies, cross-examinations, and ability to command juries and media coverage. He was later referred to as the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time) in Miami legal circles.
On July 21, 2025, he passed away at home in Coral Gables after battling an illness. At the time of his death, he was still working at his renowned law firm on Biscayne Boulevard.
