The short video displays two children painting a phoenix onto Fathima's torso as she lays on her back. She is wearing just a pair of shorts. Following this, a non-bailable case under the Information Technology Act and the Juvenile Justice Act was registered against Fathima by the Thiruvalla police. check sources

On 26 June 2023, Kerala High Court acquitted her, emphasising that a woman’s decision over her body is at “very core of her fundamental right to equality and privacy." In her appeal in the Kerala High Court, Rehana Fathima said that she went for the body painting to deliver a political statement against the default view of society according to which the naked upper body of the female is sexualised in all contexts, whereas the naked male upper body is not treated to this default sexualisation. While acquitting Rehana, Kerala High Court Justice Kauser Edappagath said it was not possible to anyone to infer that her children were used for any real or simulated sexual acts and that too for sexual gratification. check sources

• In September 2018, after the Supreme Court had allowed women in menstruating age to enter the Ayyupa Sabarimala temple, the Kerala-based activist had made an attempt to do so under heavy police security. However, with a mob of Hindu devotees who were against the verdict of SC, blocked the way and made her attempt unsuccessful. Citing the black garb she had worn for the trek, a complaint had also been filed against her. Later, on November 27, 2018, she was arrested for purportedly hurting religious emotions of people. check sources
