Some Lesser Known Facts About Rakesh Tikait

  • Rakesh Tikait is a farmers’ leader, politician, and national spokesperson of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. He is the son of the late Chaudhary Mahendra Singh Tikait, a legendary farmers’ leader who spearheaded several massive movements for peasants.

  • Rakesh has briefly served as a constable in the Delhi Police. However, during the 1993 farmers’ protests, when the Indian government was trying to pressurise Rakesh to convince his father to take back the movement, Rakesh refused to give in and resigned from his post. He subsequently jumped into the protest, and thereafter fully associated himself with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and started fighting for the rights of farmers.

  • In 1997, Rakesh was elected as the national spokesperson for the Bharatiya Kisan Union.

  • The Tikait family members are associated with the Balyan Khap. A rule of the Khap says that only the eldest son can take over the command (of any organization) after his father’s demise. Accordingly, after the death of Mahendra Singh Tikait in 2011, his eldest son, Naresh Tikait (Rakesh’s elder brother), was handed over the president’s post of the Bharatiya Kisan Union. Although Naresh Tikait was given the president’s post, all the major decisions of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) are taken by Rakesh Tikait.

  • The hereditary title “Tikait,” carried by Rakesh and his family members, was the title granted to the head of Baliyan Khap by Raja Harshavardhana, the Jat ruler of Thanesar in the 7th century. Since then, it is being conferred to each head of the Baliyan Khap and his male family members. Rakesh Tikait’s brother, Naresh Tikait, is the current head of the Baliyan Khap, who took over the command after the death of his father, Mahendra Singh Tikait, in 2011.

  • Rakesh Tikait, an influential name among the farmers of North India, has led several farmers’ movements in different parts of the country. He once led a successful agitation with thousands of farmers against the Rajasthan government, demanding the government to increase the price of millet (Bajra) which they procure from farmers. Although he had to go to Jaipur jail during the agitation, the Government of Rajasthan agreed to their demands.

  • He has come into the limelight during the 2020-21 farmers’ protests in Delhi. He is one of the farmers’ leaders who is being seen at the forefront of the ongoing agitation.
