Premgi Amaren creates rap songs for Tamil films and is recognized for his humorous roles in the movies directed by his older brother, Venkat Prabhu.
His stage name, Premgi, is a spelling mistake. Originally, it was supposed to be “Prem G” with the “G” representing his father’s name.
He is widely recognized for his famous catchphrase “Enna Koduma Sir Idhu?” (What kind of atrocity is this, sir?) and “Evvalavo pannitom, itha panna mattoma” (We’ve done so much, won’t we do this also?). “Enna Koduma Sir Idhu?” is a modified version of a well-known dialogue delivered by Prabhu in the movie Chandramukhi (2005).
In 1997, Premgi made his directorial debut in the film industry with a project named “Wanted,” featuring Venkat Prabhu and S. P. B. Charan. Despite having Yuvan Shankar Raja as the music composer and Gangai Amaren and S. P. Balasubrahmanyam as comedians, the film was not completed.
When he started his career, he was focused on music composition. He began working as an assistant to film music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja, later venturing into playback singing. His singing roles primarily involved handling rap portions in Yuvan Shankar Raja’s compositions, and he expanded to collaborate with other music composers. While working with Yuvan Shankar Raja, he also undertook remixing tasks for some of the soundtrack albums, starting with the song “Loosu Penne” from the film Vallavan.
He has composed other songs for films including Adhe Neram Adhe Idam (2009), Ennamo Nadakkudhu (2014), Zombie (2019), Kutty Story (2021), and Manmadha Leelai (2022).

In 2006, he took on his first acting role as a main lead in Silambarasan’s Vallavan, playing the friend of the heroine. This was followed by his appearance in his brother Venkat Prabhu’s directorial debut Chennai 600028 (2007), where he played the character Seenu. The film became the most significant summer blockbuster of the year, making Premgi a comedy actor.
He teamed up with his brother again for their next project, Saroja, earning praise for his role as Ganesh Kumar.
He took on a lead role in Venkat Prabhu’s Goa (2010) and continued to feature in Mankatha (2011) and Settai (2013).
Premgi has appeared in other films like Santosh Subramaniam (2008) as Sekhar, Onbadhule Guru (2013) as Charles, Tamizh Padam 2 (2018), Kasada Thapara (2021) as Bala, and Custody (2023) as Prem.

In 2005, he ventured into independent music direction with the film Gnabagam Varuthe, featuring his brother. Following that, he worked on the music for Agathiyan’s Nenjathai Killathe and Thozha, where he also played a prominent role. Besides film music, he composed music for an episode called “Planet Galatta II – Adra Sakkae” on Singapore’s satellite channel, “Mediacorp Vasantham.”
He worked as a music director on songs for films like Nenjathai Killadhe (2008), Adhe Neram Adhe Idam (2009), Maanga (2015), RK Nagar (2019), and Manmadha Leelai (2022).

Amaren and singer Suresh Peters collaborated to create a song titled “The One Anthem,” paying tribute to the legendary Michael Jackson.
He has sung other songs like “Andhra Khiladi Vidyardhi” for the film Vidyardhi (2004), “Orampo Naina” for the film Azhagai Irukkirai Bayamai Irukkirathu (2006), “Yenno Yenno” for the film Nenu Meeku Telusa?
