Premalatha Vijayakanth is an Indian politician. She is known for being the wife of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam’s (DMDK) founder Vijayakanth .
She married actor turned politician Vijayakanth in Madurai in 1990, and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader M. Karunanidhi attended the ceremony. Once, in a media discussion, she shared that her father was impressed by Vijayakanth, and then their marriage was being arranged. She said,
When he came to see me, my father was instantly impressed with his attitude. He thought if he wanted to give away his daughter, let it be to this man. He came across as a simple man and not like a hero then.”

She began supporting her husband’s party, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), when it was founded in 2006 and gained popularity in Tamil Nadu through her stage speeches.

Reportedly, Premalatha Vijayakanth is a former national-level athlete in the shot put and discus throw and has competed in various events.
On 19 October 2018, when she was appointed as the DMDK party Treasurer, Premalatha addressed issues like power cuts, price hikes, and law and order concerns and identified problems faced by the people in different areas.
She contested in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections from the Vriddhachalam constituency and won.

At the 18th executive and general council meeting of the DMDK in December 2023, her husband, Vijayakanth , who was not feeling well, declared that his wife and DMDK treasurer, Premalatha, would serve as the party’s general secretary.
On 14 December 2023, in her speech, Premalatha praised Jayalalithaa and said that the late AIAMDK supremo was her role model. In the same speech, she narrated that she had always been impressed by women politicians of her time such as Jayalalithaa, Sushma Swaraj , Mamata Banerjee , Mayawati , and Kanimozhi .
