He was born into a filmy background in Chennai. His father was an actor and his elder brother is a film producer.
Prabhu started his film career as an executive producer and he used to work under his uncle V. C. Shanmugam.
He made his film debut in a remake of a Hindi film Kalicharan in 1982.
He was a sports enthusiast in his childhood. He loved to play Football, Cricket, and Hockey. He won several sports and cultural competition at his school.
He was awarded the Tamil Nadu State Best Actor Award twice respectively in 1991 and 2001.
