Some Lesser Known Facts About Nikesh Arora
His father was an Indian Air Force Officer.
After completing his electrical engineering, Nikesh worked at Wipro for a short period, where he had to sell the minicomputers made by Wipro to the government.
In 1990, he went to the US to attend a business school. He took one suitcase and $3000 for this and graduated as the topper of his batch at Northeastern University.
Nikesh’s career began in 1992 when he joined ‘Fidelity Investments.’ He held various roles related to finance and technology management in this company. He later became the Vice President of Fidelity Technologies and worked for ‘Putnam Investments.’
In 2000, Nikesh founded ‘T-Motion’ which provides value-added services to the 3-G Services of the German company, ‘Deutsche Telekom.’ He was also the CEO of ‘T-Motion.’ It works like a subsidiary within Deutsche Telekom. In 2002, T-Motion was combined with Deutsche Telekom’s ‘T-Mobile,’ where it functioned in its core services.
Nikesh served as the Chief Marketing Officer of the T-Mobile International Division of Deutsche Telekom AG from 2001 to 2004.
He joined Google in 2004, where he performed various operating leadership roles. He worked as a Vice-President of the Europe operations till 2007 and as the President of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa region from 2007 to 2009. Later Nikesh served as President of its global sales operations and business development from 2009 to 2010.
In 2007, Nikesh joined as the Senior Advisor to the private equity firm ‘Silver Lake Partners.’
From January 2011 until July 2014, Nikesh served as Google’s Senior Vice-President and Chief Business Officer.
In 2012, Nikesh Arora became the highest-paid employee of Google and resigned from it in July 2014 as the Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer.
He joined the Board of Directors at ‘Colgate-Palmolive’ Company in March 2012 and resigned in 2014.
From October 2014 to June 2016, Nikesh worked as the President of the Japanese investment holding company ‘SoftBank Group.’ Under him, the company made a record at that time by receiving compensation worth $200 million. During his tenure, SoftBank invested more than $1 billion in Indian startups, including Oyo Rooms, Ola Cabs and Snapdeal.
On 1 June 2018, Nikesh joined an American multinational cybersecurity company, ‘Palo Alto Networks, Inc.’ as its CEO and Chairman.
His other experiences include his service as CMO and a member of the management board at Bharti Airtel, Europe and T-Mobile. He served as a trustee at the American cultural institution ‘Paley Center for Media’ at its Los Angeles branch.
He was listed 2nd on The Wall Street Journal’s 2023 list of highest-paid CEOs in the US.
