  • Nayyara Noor was a legendary Pakistani singer, who was known for her ghazals. On 20 August 2022, she took her last breath in Karachi, Pakistan.

  • Before her birth, her family shifted from Amritsar to Guwahati, Assam, India.

  • In childhood, she used to listen to bhajans of legendary singers like Kanan Devi, Kamla, and Begum Akhtar.

  • Her father was a member of The All-India Muslim League, and the Pakistani politician Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah often used to stay at Noor’s home.

  • In 1957, Noor’s mother immigrated with her children to Karachi, Pakistan. Whereas Noor’s father stayed back in India to look after their property. In the early 1990s, he also shifted to Pakistan.

  • Noor did not have any formal training in music. While she was studying in college, she sang the bhajan “Jo Tum Todo Piya” from the film ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje’ (1955) the song was originally sung by Lata Mangeshkar . Her voice attracted the attention of Prof Asrar of Islamia College, who was a maestro in music. Asrar motivated Noor to focus on her singing skills. In an interview, Noor talked about the same. She said,

    He was a very fine singer himself and was steeped in classical music. I was lucky to have had the opportunity of singing some of his numbers in my early days.”

  • Nayyara met a boy named Shehryar Zaidi during an inter-collegiate music contest. Later, they met at a gramophone record shop searching for Begum Akhar’s discs, and they became friends. Their friendship soon turned into love, and later, they got married.

  • Noor started her career as a singer with Radio Pakistan. After working in radio for a few years, she started working as a singer for various Pakistani TV shows like ‘Taal Matol’ and ‘Sach Gup.’

  • Nayyara has worked as a playback singer in various Pakistani films. Some of her popular songs from the films are:
