Some Lesser Known Facts About Nafisa Kamal
Nafisa Kamal is a young Bangladeshi Businesswoman and an entrepreneur. She is counted as the first and the only woman chairman of the Bangladesh Premier Leagueâs (BPLâs) franchise team Comilla Victorians that is considered one of the best cricket teams in Bangladesh.
Nafisa is the younger daughter of Mustafa Kamal, who is also an Entrepreneur, politician and the former President of ICC. She idolises her father, and just like him, even Nafisa has been a sports enthusiast since she was a child. During her childhood, she accompanied her father to watch tournaments all around the world, and she enjoyed that a lot. In an interview, she said,
It was my natural choice to get into cricket as my father is my biggest inspiration. I have grown up watching cricket. I even missed classes and exams to watch tournaments. My father used to take me all over the world to watch cricket. I do not think I have missed any major series growing up. I have visited all the stadiums in the world.â

She did her O-Level and A-Level under EDEXCEL International, London Examination General Certificate of Education. After completing her studies from (MIT), United States, she returned to Bangladesh and joined her family business organisation in the country.
In 2012, she began her career by owning the team Sylhet Royals for two seasons of the BPL, and then, she became the managing director of the Comilla Victorians from its third season. Her team won their second-time championâs title in the BPL 2019.

In 2017, during an interview, Nafisa proposed to build a cricket stadium in Comilla and also demanded home rights and said,
I will make a suggestion to the board. Because we donât have a stadium in Comilla yet, we have it in the pipeline, the plan has been passed and it will come in a few years. And since we donât have it yet, and there are just two-three stadiums used in BPL in two-three different cities, we should just designate those for each match. We should be given home rights. On certain matches, my (Comilla) fans stood outside with tickets as they were not allowed to enter the stadium. Where some others had free entry without tickets. These issues really need to be taken care of.â
The Comilla Victorian Team
In 2019, Nafisa expressed her disagreement about participating in the seventh edition of the tournament, terming it a âloss projectâ for the owners; however, the BPL, previously, in a statement, had termed its last edition âsuccessful;â making her infuriated over this. While talking about this in an interview, she said,
I have been a team owner in BPL for last seven [six] seasons but I am yet to break-even. It is a loss project for all of us and I am honestly thinking if I should remain in BPL next year. We [franchises] are big stakeholders in the tournament and so it has totally been one-sided. We are not earning anything but spending only. My question is why will I change the model if it has been claimed as the most successful one? Why not continue with it? âŚWe want continuity of a successful model.â
She often shares her experience of being the only woman among the male-dominated cricket fraternity of Bangladesh and finds it inappropriate sometimes. While talking about this, in an interview, she quoted,
 Itâs very sad to say and I obviously try to downplay that all the time, especially coming from a country where we have a leader like Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been leading the way for us being a woman. Itâs sad for us because, after so many years, Iâm the only girl here. Iâm the only female in the auction room, or when we get together for the playersâ events. So I think itâs a pity and they want to make me feel that Iâm the only female there and those issues come into play like say when Iâm running the team. But I have a good support system with my coach and management. So we try to make the most of it but itâs still a sad reality here â that being the only female cricket organiser in cricket so far, itâs quite difficult.â
Being the daughter of AHM Mustafa Kamal who is the former President of BCB, she always had certain privileges; however, it wasnât a smooth path for Nafisa to ascend the scales in the male-dominated cricket fraternity of Bangladesh. Moreover, it became more challenging for her to make a name of her own as she had to carry her fatherâs legacy. Despite this, being associated with cricket makes her feel overwhelmed.
Her aim is to reach the highest level of cricket like her father. She further wishes to associate with BCB and then route to ICC in the coming future. According to Nafisa, she wants to become the first woman president of the BCB and ICC. Moreover, she believes to achieve her goal with her hard work and strong determination.
She further plans to work with the Bangladesh womenâs cricket team in the future and wants to go a long way with the team. She also believes that the Bangladesh women cricket team will win the World Cup soon.
She is also on the board of directors of Asia Pacific General Insurance and The Farmers Bank Limited. In addition, she is the director of the LK group. She is also known to be the advocate of gender equality. She also does a lot of charity work.
The Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal is also said to transfer his entire holding of shares in Asia Pacific General Insurance Company (APGIC) to his daughter Nafisa Kamal.
