Nadira Mehrin is an Indian actor, model and journalist who is known for being the first transwoman to take admission to the governmentâs transgender quota for her first masterâs degree. In 2023, she appeared appearing as a contestant on the Bigg Boss (Malayalam season 5) reality show on the Asianet channel.
She was born into a Muslim family.
When she was sixteen years old, she realized that her identity was different from the one she was assigned at the time of birth. At the age of 17, she opened up about her identity after which she was asked to leave her home. In an interview, she said that she did not have money to continue her undergraduate studies. She received support from the trans community who helped her pursue her studies. She used to tutor students and did some modelling to earn money.
She believes that education is the only thing that can bring change to society. In an interview, she said that she wanted to open paths for other trans students who want to pursue higher studies.
In an interview, she said that she faced many problems while pursuing graduation. There was no washroom facility that was gender-neutral.
When she was in class 8, she was sexually assaulted by her classmates. When she complained about this to her teachers, they told her that she was at fault because she could not behave like a girl. After that she felt very uncomfortable going to school, so she stopped going and started studying on her own. She did not go back to school till class 10.
In an interview, she said that when she used to go to the police station with a complaint, they never registered their complaints and always favoured the assaulters.
In an interview, she said that the acting industry also sometimes discriminates transgenders. In the interview, she further said that when a man and a woman can play the role of a transgender why are transgenders not cast for the role.
In 2018, she contested as the All India Studentsâ Federation (AISF) general secretary candidate at University College, Thiruvananthapuram, during her post-graduation in Political Science. She became the vice president of the federation (AISF) in 2022. In an interview, she said that she was active in politics since her school days. In the interview, she added that many political parties have trans members, but there are very less who contest in elections.

In 2021, she became the first trans person in Kerala to enrol in the governmentâs transgender quota for her first post-graduation degree and second masterâs degree.

In 2021, Nadira, Sruthy Sithara and Amnageet started an online campaign Kaleidoscope to empower trans people across India. In an interview, she talked about the campaign and said,
Our aim is to spread awareness so that people can live a life of dignity. We also provide mental health support to the community.â
In 2022, she came live on Facebook and revealed that when she was staying in the Deputy Wardenâs room at Priyamvada, a womenâs hostel in Kaladi, the centre of Sri Shankaracharya University of Sanskrit, the warden of the hostel asked her to leave the hostel at 12 in the night. The incident happened when she requested her hostel authority to change the fan in her room which was not working properly as a fan is a necessity for her hormone treatment.
She has worked as a resource person for the Kerala government.
