Mukhyamantri Chandru is an Indian actor and politician.
He is the member of the Indian National Congress.
Chandru was born in a lower-middle-class family in Honnasandra, Nelamangala, Bangalore Rural, Mysore.
In college days, Chandru used to watch plays at Ravindra Kalakshetra for entertainment. It was from there that he developed an interest in theatre.
After graduating from Bangalore’s Government Arts and Science College, Chandru joined the Bangalore University as a clerk.
Simultaneously, he started doing theatre.
In 1978, Chandru was offered to play the role of ‘Krishna Dwaipayana Kaushal,’ the Chief Minister of a fictitious Indian State of Udayanchal in a play titled “Mukhyamantri.”

He framed his own dialogues while acting, turning the serious drama into a comedy. His acting was loved by all and earned him the moniker of ‘Mukhyamantri.’
He made his acting debut in 1983 with the Kannada film, “Chakravyuha.”
Next, he appeared in the Kannada films, “Mududida Tavare Aralithu,” “Jwaalamukhi,” “Guri,” “Avale Nanna Hendthi,” and “Neenu Nakkare Haalu Sakkare.”
Chandru has worked in many popular Kannada films, including “Sipayi,” “Ammavra Ganda,” “Karnana Sampathu,” “Mathadana,” “Manasugula Mathu Madhura,” and “Govindaya Namaha.”
Chandru entered the politics in 1985 by joining the Janata Party.
In the same year, he contested and won the assembly elections from Gauribidanur.
In 1990, Chandru resigned from the Janata Dal because of the ongoing rift between Ramakrishna Hegde and Deve Gowda
In 1991, Chandru joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, and subsequently, he became the Member of the Legislative Council, first in 1998 and then in 2004.

Subsequently, he became the chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority in 2008 and served the state till 2013.
While serving as the chairperson of the Kannada Development Authority (KDA), Chandru took various steps to protect and promote the Kannada language. In 2008, he asked for a compulsory display of vehicle registration plates of all Kannada governments vehicle in Kannada. He even worked towards making Kannada a compulsory subject for classes 1 to 5.
In 2013, he left the Bharatiya Janata Party and joined the Indian national Congress.

During an interview, Chandru shared that his IQ was so low in childhood that he was afraid to talk to his friends.
He received an honorary doctorate by the Gulbarga University for his contribution to Kannada theatre and activism in promoting and safeguarding the Kannada language.
Chandru was not the first choice to play the role of ‘Chief Minister’ in the Kannada play, “Mukhyamantri.” The role first went to Lohithaswa who could not portray it due to illness.
In January 2020, Chandru’s play, “Mukhyamantri”completed its 700th show across India and outside.
Chandru said during an interview that there was a time when his parents were financially low and could not afford to send him to Bangalore for further studies. At that time, he used to stay at his relatives and friends places. He also shared that he had even spent his nights at public places in Bangalore during his college days.
