Some Lesser Known Facts About Muhammad Abbas
Muhammad Abbas moved to New Zealand from Pakistan as a 1-year-old when his father, Azhar Abbas, joined Wellington’s Karori Cricket Club.
He hails from Roshanpur, a small village in Khanewal District, Pakistan.
He started by playing with a tape ball before training at the Eden Roskill District Cricket Club.
He was only 11 years old when he scored a century for Western Districts against Central Districts in an Auckland year seven tournament.

He later played in the King’s College First XI for 4 years under the coaching of former New Zealand spinner Dipak Patel.

In December 2022, he, along with his family, moved from Auckland to Wellington after his father was appointed as Wellington’s fast bowling coach.
In the 2023 Under-19 Men’s Nationals 50-over Tournament, he scored back-to-back hundreds for Wellington, with 101 runs not out in 68 balls against Northern Districts and 103 runs against Central Districts.

He made his New Zealand A debut against Australia A on 8 April 2023 with 3 other cricketers: Mitchell Hay, Adi Ashok, and Will O’Rourke.
He later played in all domestic tournaments in New Zealand.

He is a top-order batter and either opens the bowling or comes in as the first change bowler.
He was inspired by the Pakistani bowler, Wasim Akram  while growing up, as he initially focused on bowling rather than batting. He was also inspired by Trent Boult and Kane Williamson .
He made headlines in March 2025 after getting selected for New Zealand to play in the 3-match ODI series against Pakistan, his first call-up for national duties.
After he was named in the squad, his father expressed pride and claimed his lifelong dream was fulfilled. He said, “From the moment he was born, I was determined to make him a cricketer. My goal was to ensure that my son became a professional player.”
