Some Lesser Known Facts About Mojtaba Khamenei
Mojtaba Khamenei is the 2nd son of Ali Khamenei , the Supreme Leader of Iran.
He first came to know that his father was a revolutionary when the National Security and Intelligence Organization (SAVAK) arrested Ali in 1976. His elder brother, Mostafa Khamenei, told him the truth.
During the Iran-Iraq War from 1980-1988, he also fought under the Habib Battalion. At one point in the war, he went missing while recapturing Mehran but was found later.
In 1989, when Ali Khamenei became the Supreme Leader of Iran, Mojtaba started his clerical studies in Tehran under his father and Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, who later became the Chief Justice of Iran.
In 1999, he went to Qom where he started studying under Ayatollah Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah Yazdi, Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpayegani, and Ayatollah Sayyed Mohsen Kharrazi.
Later in the early 2000s, media reports suggested that he was playing the role of a power broker in his father’s government.

In 2009, the UK government froze a bank account, rumoured to be Mojtaba’s account, that had $1.6 billion.
in 2019, the US government passed Executive Order 13867 sanctioning him for “representing the supreme leader in an official capacity despite never being elected or appointed to a government position aside from work in the office of his father.”

He reportedly owns significant assets in the Ayandeh Bank. There are many claims that his assets are distributed in several banks across the United Arab Emirates, Syria, Venezuela, and several African countries.
He also owns the largest shopping centre, the largest building project, a private plane and helicopter for urgent trips, Mercedez-Benz vehicles, and horses.
He also holds the monopoly to sell French carmaker Renault’s cars and their parts in Iran.
In 2024, there were rumours that he would become the successor of his father as the Supreme Leader of Iran as his elder brother, Mostafa , mostly works in the religious field.
