Some Lesser Known Facts About Moin Akhter

  • Moin Akhter began his career at the age of 13 in Karachi while performing in variety shows and school and university events.

  • Moin Akhter played the character of Shylock in William Shakespeare’s play titled ‘The Merchant of Venice’ which was performed in a theatre in Pakistan during the initial days of his acting career. He was just 13 years old when he played the character.

  • Initially, Moin Akhter’s father was against his decision to pursue acting. Moin’s father Muhammad Ebrahim once beat Moin Akhter with a belt after he discovered that his son was pursuing a career in acting.

  • 35 years later after getting beaten up by his father for getting into the acting industry, Moin was getting ready for a show that would have the then President of Pakistan General Pervez Musharraf in the audience and that’s when his father asked him if he too could join.

  • When Moin’s father asked if he could attend the show too, that’s when Moin told him that he was not sure if he would be allowed to be there due to the security protocol to which Moin’s father said “Tumhe kaun rokega?” (“Who will stop you?”) and that’s when Moin got to know that his father has finally accepted and is proud of the work he does.

  • Moin Akhter was very fluent in many languages including English, Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Pashto, Balochi, Gujarati, and Hindi.

  • Moin Akhter began his stand-up comedy career with stage and Radio Pakistan while he was in his teenage years.

  • Moin Akhter had his first television appearance on 6 September 1966, in a variety show which was held on PTV to celebrate the first defence day of Pakistan.

  • He started doing standup-comedy in 1966-67 by mimicking Hollywood star Anthony Quinn and followed it with an impersonation of the former American President John F Kennedy and other international personalities.

  • In 1978, Moin Akhter was cast in the Pakistan Television Corporation sketch comedy series titled ‘Fifty Fifty’ which was loosely on the American comedy show titled ‘Saturday Night Live.’ The TV series was telecast on the PTV channel.

  • In 1990, Moin Akhter was cast in the Pakistani television long play titled ‘Rozi’ in which he played the character of Haroon/Rozi (a female character). The play was an Urdu adaptation of the Hollywood film titled ‘Tootsie’ (1982).

  • Moin Akhter called his performance in ‘Rozi’ as one of his favourite on-screen characters that he had played.

  • In 1993, he was cast in the Pakistani drama film titled ‘Mr. Tabedaar.’

  • In the late 1990s, Moin was cast in the Pakistani theatrical film titled ‘Eid Train.’

  • Moin not only performed in Pakistan but also played in several stage shows like ‘Bakra Qiston Pe’ and ‘Buddha Ghar Pe Hai’ (1989) with Umer Sharif in India.

  • In 2002, Moin Akhter was cast by Anwar Maqsood in the Pakistani television comedy show titled ‘Loose Talk’ which was a satire-comedy talk show which was loosely inspired by BBC World Service’s show titled ‘HARDTalk.’

  • In ‘Loose Talk,’ Moin Akhter used to play the character of a guest who impersonates hundreds of different personalities including Iraqi politician Saddam Hussein, former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh , and Indian politician Sushma Swaraj . Apart from the famous personalities, Anwar used to portray funny characters like a harmonium player, a Christian nurse, a transgender woman, and a single mother.

  • In the same year, he was cast as the host for the Pakistani TV game show titled ‘Kya Aap Banaingay Crorepati?’ which was based on the British format of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.’

  • In 2006, Moin Akhter released his Pakistani song titled ‘Hoten Hai Bewafa.’

  • After his death in 2011, the wax museum Madame Tussauds had expressed its wish to include a statue of Moin Akhter in their London museum. However, Moin Akhter’s family declined an offer to make a wax statue of him for Madame Tussauds Museum due to religious reasons.

  • He had a habit of not wearing formal suits if they did not have matching pairs of socks with them.

  • He performed in many Pakistani sketches like ‘Studio Dhai’ (1991), ‘Studio Pon-E-Teen,’ and ‘Studio Char Bees.’
