In childhood, he wanted to become a pilot.
While he was studying in school and college, he participated in various sports like swimming.

While growing up, he used to accompany his mother on the sets of her films.
When he was in college, the Indian film director Raj Khosla offered him a role in the film, but his mother wanted him to learn Urdu first.
Initially, his films failed to do well at the box office, and he took two years break from the films and did an aviation course.
On 21 May 1975, he started a private firm named Meghdoot Agencies Private Limited. Later, it was shut down.
In 1981, Mohnish, along with his mother Nutan , was signed for the Hindi film ‘Roohi.’ Later, they left the film.
At the beginning of his career, he appeared in a few Hindi films like ‘Teri Baahon Mein’ (1984), ‘Meri Adalat’ (1984), ‘Purana Mandir’ (1984), and ‘Itihaas’ (1987).

He came into the limelight with his role as Jeevan in the Hindi film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ in 1989. The Indian actor Salman Khan had suggested his name for the film.

Mohnish has acted in various Hindi films like ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!’ (1994), ‘Raja Hindustani’ (1996), ‘Hum Saath-Saath Hain’ (1999), ‘LOC: Kargil’ (2003), and ‘Panipat’ (2019).
