Mohammed Zulfiqaruddin started playing football at a young age with his friends.
He was spotted by Syed Abdul Rahim while playing in a local match. Rahim told him that he could play for India and later took him under his wing.
He was the youngest member of the Indian football team which came 4th in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

In April 2024, a Bollywood film āMaidaanā was released which featuredĀ Ajay Devgn Ā asĀ Syed Abdul Rahim , the coach of the Indian football team which qualified for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.
In the 1956-57 Santosh Trophy, he helped Hyderabad win the tournament.

Zulfiqaruddin played for India in the 1958 Asian Games held in Tokyo, Japan.
From 1955 to 1967, he served as the captain of Andhra Pradesh in the Santosh Trophy. He also represented the Andhra Police team in various tournaments including theĀ IFA Shield,Ā Durand Cup,Ā andĀ Rovers Cup.
He retired from the Andhra Pradesh Police as the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

In 2009, he and other members of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics team were honoured by then-IndianĀ sports minister M. S. Gill.

In 2010, he was included in the Selection Committee for the Dronacharya Awards.
He faced financial problems after his retirement and once said in an interview that he did not have the money to get his children married.
Zulfiqaruddin used to do namaz every day, even during the matches.
