Some Lesser Known Facts About Mira Murati
Mira Murati was interested in mathematics and physics from a very young age. According to her, she liked appearing in Olympiad tests and was always looking for problem sets to work on.
She received the UWC Davis scholarship and graduated from the Pearson College UWC, Vancouver in 2007.
In 2011, she worked as a summer analyst at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo, Japan for less than a year.
After completing engineering in 2012, she worked as an Advanced Concepts Engineer at Zodiac Aerospace (now part of Safran) in Huntington Beach, California for over a year.
From 2013 to 2016, she worked at Tesla, Inc. as a Senior Product Manager for Model X.
She worked at Leap Motion Inc. (now Ultraleap) as Vice-President of the Product and Engineering division from 2016 to 2018.
In 2018, she joined OpenAI as Vice-President of Applied AI and Partnerships. She has played a vital role in developing and commercialising AI systems and models, like ChatGPT, Dall-E, and GPT4.
She was eventually promoted to the Chief Technical Officer of OpenAI in May 2022.
In March 2024, in an interview, she explained about Sora, the company’s new AI model, that can generate video from text. When asked about the data they worked on for the research, she gave a vague reply that they worked on publicly available data.
At the end of May 2023, when the CEO of OpenAI Sam Altman stepped down briefly, Mira Murati acted as the interim CEO.
In May 2024, the Metropolitan Museum of Art collaborated with OpenAI to incorporate artificial intelligence in its annual Spring Costume Institute exhibition. Mira Murati attended the inauguration Met Gala in a 1951 Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall/ Winter collection.
