In his second year, Miles Routledge started studying banking and finance and founded the Loughborough Investment Banking Society at his university.

In March 2021, he started planning a trip to Afghanistan, saying he wanted to see what life was like there and how it was different, stating that the country had been in the news since 2001. He also claimed that he wanted to do some charity work and visit historical Christian sites.
The visa and flight to Afghanistan cost him about £1,000.
His preparations included a GPS-enabled SOS button, which regularly updated his online friends about his location. He set up an automatic Facebook post (a ādead manās switchā) in case he did not return.
Miles Routledge became known as āLord Milesā after he shared on social media that he had bought a Ā£15 lordship certificate online. He used this certificate to get the title āLordā inked on a credit card.

If Iām wrong and die, edit a laughing soundtrack over my posts. Itāll be funny, I think.ā
Soon after, chaotic events started happening in the area where he was staying, including a bank run and people firing guns into the air. With the help of his guide, he tried to reach the British embassy by hiding himself as a woman in a burqa.
When they arrived at the embassy and found it empty, they went to the airport. The city was captured by the Taliban on 15 August 2021, and he got stuck there.
After that, his posts about his experience in Afghanistan started spreading quickly on 4chan, Facebook, and Twitch.
