Miguel Uribe Turbay grew up in Bogotá, Colombia.

In August 1990, Miguel’s mother was kidnapped by a drug gang on the orders of Pablo Escobar, a drug lord and narcoterrorist, who planned it to pressure the government to stop sending criminals to the U.S.
Miguel’s mother was kept for five months and was accidentally shot by police during a rescue on 25 January 1991.
At 26, Miguel entered politics by winning a seat on Bogotá’s city council with the Liberal Party. He soon became known for his independent leadership style.
In 2014, Uribe was elected Council President with 32 out of 45 votes. He became the youngest person ever to hold the position in Bogotá.
That same year, he was praised as one of the top council members by the ‘Concejo Cómo Vamos’ program and was recognised by journalists as a rising star.
While serving as Bogotá’s Council President, Miguel openly challenged Mayor Gustavo Petro’s policies, especially on waste management and social programs. During his term, he focused on strengthening public institutions and policies that helped improve daily life in the city.
In 2016, Miguel was selected by Mayor Enrique Peñalosa to serve as Bogotá’s Secretary of Government. With this appointment, he became the youngest individual in the city’s history to hold the position.
As Secretary of Government, Miguel focused on city safety, community harmony, and coordinating government efforts to solve Bogotá’s issues.
In 2018, Miguel ran as an independent candidate for mayor of Bogotá. However, he was defeated by a Green Alliance candidate named Claudia López.
In 2022, Uribe contested the legislative elections as a candidate for the Democratic Centre party and won, becoming a Senator of the Republic with 226,922 votes; it was the highest number received by any candidate in the country.

As a member of the Colombian Senate, Miguel worked on laws that supported safety, economic freedom, education, and democracy. He also became one of the main voices against President Gustavo Petro, gaining a strong role as an opposition leader.
As a member of the Senate’s Third Constitutional Committee, he introduced Bill 191 of 2022 to promote political diversity in education and Bill 192 of 2022 to create a school voucher program in Colombia.
On 7 June 2025, Miguel Uribe attended a rally at El Golfito Park in Modelia, Bogotá. During the event, he was shot from behind and suffered three gunshot wounds, including two to the head.

Following the shooting, a gunfight started between Miguel Uribe’s security guards and the attacker, which injured the suspect and two other people.
Authorities arrested a suspect under 15 years old, and on the same day, Defence Minister Pedro Arnulfo Sánchez announced a reward of 3 billion Colombian pesos (about USD 729,000) for information leading to others involved.
Miguel was initially rushed to Engativá Medical Center for urgent treatment before being airlifted to Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, where Dr. Fernando Hakim carried out a detailed surgery on his brain and blood vessels.
In the early hours of 8 June 2025, Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá hospital confirmed that the surgery went well, although Uribe Turbay remained in serious condition in the ICU.
