Some Lesser Known Facts About Maziar Mike Doustdar
Maziar Mike Doustdar is an Iranian-born Austrian national who grew up in the United States.
At 22 years old, he relocated to Austria to attend Webster University in Vienna, where he earned a BA in International Business with a focus on Marketing.
Doustdar joined Novo Nordisk, a multinational pharmaceutical company, in 1992 as an office clerk in Vienna, Austria. He had served Novo Nordisk for 33 years.
From 1993 to 2007, he held various positions in finance, IT, logistics, operations, and marketing across different sectors of Novo Nordisk’s emerging markets.
He began his professional life at Nova Nordisk in Vienna and later worked at its Athens and Zurich offices.
In 2007, he was appointed Novo Nordisk Near East general manager, managing business based in Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Afghanistan, Jordan and Lebanon.
In 2010, Maziar Mike Doustdar was promoted to Vice President of the Business Area Near East.
He spent 5 years living and working in Turkey, where he managed both the Syrian and Turkish businesses. His second son was born in Istanbul.
In 2012, he relocated to Malaysia, where he was responsible for the total business and operations in over +15 countries within South East Asia & Australasia.
In 2013, he was promoted to Senior Vice President of Novo Nordisk’s International Operations and managed business in 150+ countries.
In April 2015, Maziar Mike Doustdar was promoted to Executive Vice President, continuing his Novo Nordisk’s International Operations and became a member of Novo Nordisk Executive Management.
In September 2016, Mike Doustdar was promoted to executive vice president, assuming additional responsibilities for an expanded International Operations that leads all global commercial units, except for the USA and Canada.
In March 2022, he joined Orion Corporation, a global pharmaceuticals company, as a member of the board. He also holds 1,511 Orion B-shares as of December 2024 and is a member of its Personnel & Remuneration Committee.
By 2024, under his leadership, Novo Nordisk’s international operations more than doubled sales to approximately 112 billion DKK, serving 35 million patients and managing nearly 20,000 employees.
On July 29, 2025, Maziar Mike Doustdar was officially announced as the next CEO of Novo Nordisk, succeeding Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen, effective August 7, 2025.

His appointment as CEO came at a time when Novo Nordisk was facing a tumbling share price and market challenges in its business.
He is the first non‑Danish CEO in Novo Nordisk’s 102-year history.
Doustdar also sits on the Board of Trustees for the International Community School in Zurich.
From 2017 to 2021, he served as chairperson of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) Patient Access Committee.
Doustdar currently resides in Switzerland with his wife and younger son, both of whom are Dutch citizens. He also has an older son who is studying in Scotland for his higher education.
