Some Lesser Known Facts About Mayank Markande
Mayank Markande grew up in a middle-class family in Patiala, Punjab.
His father, Bikram Sharma, works as a Sub Divisional Officer with the Chief Electrical Inspector Office at Patiala.
He developed an interest in cricket at a very young age and as a kid, he used to watch videos of Anil Kumble and Shane Warne and tried to grasp their bowling skills.
In 2006, when Mayank was just 8 years old, he joined the NICS Academy in Patiala to train under Mahesh Inder Singh, former Punjab off-spinner and father of former Indian all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi.
He initially started as a medium-pacer, but his coach asked him to concentrate more on leg-spin.
When Mayank was 13 years old, he met former domestic cricketer and former assistant coach Munish Bali at a cricket ground in Baradari (Patiala). Impressed with Mayank’s skills, Munish Bali asked him to come for a trial and later began training him.
Mayank made his T20 debut for Punjab against J&K on 14 January 2018 in the 2017–18 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in Delhi.
In the 2018 Indian Premier League auctions, Mayank Markande was bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs. 20 lakhs. In his debut match for Mumbai Indians, Mayank claimed three wickets including that of MS Dhoni while playing against Chennai Super Kings.

On 7 February 2018, he made his List A debut for Punjab against Haryana at Alur in the 2017–18 Vijay Hazare Trophy. In the match, he claimed three wickets.
In the same year, Markande was named in India’s Emerging team for the 2018 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. In the tournament, he claimed 12 wickets in four matches.
During the 2018–19 Deodhar Trophy, Mayank represented the India B team.
During the 2018–19 Ranji Trophy, Mayank made his First-class debut for Punjab against Andhra Pradesh at Vishakhapatnam on 1 November 2018. In his debut match, he scored a half-century and claimed five wickets. He became the highest wicket-taker of the tournament by claiming 28 wickets in six matches.
In an interview, while talking about Mayank’s performance, his coach Munish Bali said,
Mayank has progressed a lot in the last one year. He has a very deceptive googly which turns very fast and initially it meant that he would bowl leg-spin bit slow resulting in fewer revolutions in the air. We worked on this and it has made him more potent.”
In the 2019–20 Deodhar Trophy, Mayank was a part of the India C squad.
In February 2019, while Mayank was playing for India ‘A’ against England Lions in Mysore, he dismissed five players by giving 31 runs on the third day of the match. His performance caught the eyes of the selectors, who named Mayank in India’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for their series against Australia.

In an interview, while talking about how he felt when Mayank told him that he was included in the Indian team, his father Bikram said,
I thought Mayank called me to talk about the five-wicket haul. And when he told us about the selection for the Indian team, we could not believe it. I was a national level athlete and held the still-standing Punjab U-16 record of 6.19 metre, before an ankle injury cut short my career. I still remember Mayank was about 5 years old when I took him to athletics coaches at NIS, Patiala seeing his fine running. But he always liked cricket. Playing for India is the biggest thing and we are glad that he can achieve his dream.”
In the 2022 Indian Premier League auctions, Mayank was retained by the Mumbai Indians.
Mayank was bagged for Rs. 50 lakhs by the SunRisers Hyderabad in the 2023 Indian Premier League auction.

In the 2025 Indian Premier League auctions, Mayank was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs. 30 lakhs.
According to India wicket-keeper Ajay Ratra, it was Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh who provided Mayank with the opportunity to showcase his talent to Indian selectors.
Mayank is very particular about his fitness and follows a strict workout regimen.
