James’s football career began as a wide receiver at Wake Forest.

During his second year in school, James suffered an injury and broke his collarbone after playing only three games. He had to sit out the rest of the season and was only able to play four games the following year. He remained on the bench throughout the season and played only four matches, during which he _c_aught a career-high 40 passes for 401 yards as a senior.
After graduating from the university, Matt tried out for the NFL and gave trials at the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints, but was not selected for either team.
James finished his football career at Wake Forest with 48 receptions for 458 yards.
James worked at PNC Bank in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before shifting to New York City. He works for CBRE Group, Inc., a commercial real estate company in New York City. James is also the founder of ABC Food Tours, a non-profit organization that educates children in underserved communities about food and exercise in New York City.
James is primarily known for being the first male African-American lead for The Bachelor in season 25.
In September 2021, James was announced as one of the celebrities competing on season 30 of Dancing with the Stars. He was partnered with Lindsay Arnold. They were eliminated on week 4, finishing in 12th place.
James met Rachael Kirkconnell on season 25 of The Bachelor in 2020.
James is also a marathon runner and participated in the 2022 and 2023 New York City Marathon.
