During her 20s, Marlene Lufen was a competitive swimmer at the Berlin Sports Club. Later, she acted in theatre and founded her own theatre group in Berlin.
In 1995, Marlene Lufen went to the United States of America for a six-month internship and during her internship, she visited the news department of the television station of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) in San Francisco.
In the same year, she started working for the German TV broadcasting show titled ‘Akte.’
