In 1967, Mark Hyman moved to Toronto with his mother and sister.
While pursuing his graduation at Cornell University, he majored in Chinese Medicine and aspired to move to China to study it further; however, he later decided not to do so as he didn’t want to spend his 20s in a fascist dictatorship. Later, he completed his MD with the academic honour of Magna Cum Laude.
He has also majored in Buddhism and studied Medicine Buddha.
Mark Hyman began his medical career as a family doctor in Idaho and later began working as an emergency department physician in Massachusetts in the United States of America.
In 1996, he began working as the co-medical director at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, Massachusetts. He worked there till 2011.
After working as a co-medical director for 10 years, he established The UltraWellness Center in a small shopping mall in Lenox.
In 2001, he became the Board President of clinical affairs of the Institute for Functional Medicine.
In 2009, Hyman testified before the United States Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions about integrative medical care.
Mark Hyman actively writes a blog titled “The Doctor’s Farmacy” in which he discuss various topics related to human health and welfare. He also runs a podcast by the same name which is available on various podcast platforms including Apple Music and Spotify.
He has published various books on human health and longevity including Food Fix, Eat Fat (2020), Get Thin (2016), and Young Forever: The Secrets to Living Your Longest, Healthiest Life (2013).

In December 2013, Hyman co-authored a book titled “The Daniel Plan” with Pastor Rick Warren and Daniel Amen which was later ranked one in the New York Times bestseller list.
Hyman is often seen advocating the controversial alternative medicine known as Functional Medicine.
He has been the editor-in-chief of a peer-reviewed journal known as the Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine. He has also worked as a contributing editor for the journal.
In 2014, he wrote about the Pegan Diet for the first time in his book Food: What the Heck Should I Eat? which was published in 2018.
In the same year, he was featured as an expert in the American documentary film Fed Up, produced by Laurie David and Katie Couric. The film raises awareness about childhood obesity in the US.
Hyman is often seen actively promoting a diet known as Peganism, which is a plant-rich diet and is a combination principle of the paleo and vegan diets; however, Peganism has been called a fad diet by many renowned dietitians. He discussed that saturated fat does not cause heart disease and obesity.
In 2016, Mark published a book titled “Eat Fat Get Thin” in which he discussed the ideas about consuming dietary fat.
In the same year, he asked for a federal investigation into the U.S. fluoridation policy that controlled the adjustment of fluoride to a public water supply. Hyman wrote that communities of colour were at particular risk of adverse health impacts.
While he promotes the use of the alternative medicine known as Functional Medicine which is a controversial form of alternative medicine; however, there is no confirmed clinical evidence of the effectiveness of Functional Medicine.
Mark Hyman has worked as a medical adviser to American politicians Bill and Hillary Clinton.

In October 2017, Quackwatch, an American website, featured Mark Hyman’s book Ultraprevention: The 6-Week Plan That Will Make You Healthy for Life on its list of non-recommended books due to promoting misinformation and containing unsubstantiated advice.
