Mannan is a scholar of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) who hails from South Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
He was a bright student and has received an award for the best paper presented at an international conference on “Water, Environment, Ecology, and Society” in 2016.
He sparked headlines in the very first week of 2018, when a photo of him holding an under barrel grenade launcher went viral on social media, with a message declaring that he has joined the militancy.
He had joined the militant group Hizbul Mujahideen on 5 January 2018, which was confirmed by the group on 8 January 2017.
According to his family, he was supposed to join his family for the winter holidays in December, but his family lost contact with him as his phone was switched off from 4 January, after which his family lodged a missing report with the police.
His family members even appealed for his return, but he has seemed unaffected.
