She was born in a middle-class joint family.

Since childhood, she used to copy the dance steps of the Indian actress Madhuri Dixit , but her mother used to ask her to assist her in cooking food instead of dancing.
While she was in school, she was one of the toppers of her class. She also participated in various extra-curricular activities.

She once shared that in her family, male members were given preference over female members. She was never allowed to go on a night out at her friendsâ place. She once said that while growing up, she was so fed up with patriarchal dominance in her family that she ran away from her home to make her career as an actress.
Her father was so upset over this that he disowned her and disallowed her to use his surname. After which she changed her name from Reema Lamba to Mallika Sherawat (Sherawat was her motherâs maiden name).
She had sold her maternal grandmotherâs jewellery at the time she ran from her home.
For auditions, she used to travel by local trains as bus fares were too high for her at that time.
Mallika then did a TV ad with Shah Rukh Khan after which she started getting more offers of TV commercials.
She also worked as a model in various print advertisements and photoshoots.
