Makarand Deshpande has an unconventional personality and noted for his unusual outfits and hairstyle.
While he was in college, he wrote plays for intercollegiate competitions.
He made his Bollywood acting debut in 1988 with the film ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’ as Baba.

Makarand Deshpande has mostly played comic, supporting, and negative roles in the films.
He has worked in different languages like Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Malayalam, and Marathi.
In 1990, he joined the ‘Prithvi Theatre’ as a theatre artist, with the help of Sanjana Kapoor .
Makarand also used to run an informal drama troupe ‘Head’s Together.’
In 1993, he, along with Kay Kay Menon , started a theatre ‘Ansh Theatre Group.’

He has also released a book titled ‘Ansh Theatre Group.’ The book has limited editions.

In 2011, he, along with Urmila Matondkar , judged the Marathi reality TV show ‘Marathi Paul Padate Pudhe.’
Apart from being a great actor, writer & director, Makarand Deshpande is also a good singer and has sung the songs for several films like ‘Jungle’ (2000), ‘Ek Aur Visphot’ (2002), ‘Supari’ (2003), and ‘Naach’ (2004).
He wants to play the character of the famous Indian painter “Raja Ravi Verma.”
In 2013, he participated in the sports reality entertainment show ‘Celebrity Cricket League’ (CCL) Season 3, as a player of ‘Veer Marathi’ team.
