When he was 19 years old, he decided to move to Nashville. However, before this, his older brother Chris died in a car accident.
His mother, LeClaire, made a statement following the death of her elder son. She said,
We knew Luke at some point would come to Nashville. But … you can’t leave your family, and … I couldn’t bear the thought of him being away.”
During his college days, Luke joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and dated Caroline, who later became his wife.

After some years, they met again when he performed at a bar in Statesboro. They were in a relationship before getting married.

Two years after completing his formal education, his father encouraged him to move to Nashville to pursue his music dreams.
At Nashville, he first became a songwriter.
Soon, he started singing, and his first song All My Friends Say became a hit. It was co-written with producer Jeff Stevens. It reached number 5 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
In 2004, one of his first songs was the title track of the music album My Honky Tonk History by Travis Tritt.
