Some Lesser Known Facts About Linda Nolan
Linda Nolan’s early childhood was rooted in Ireland, where her family resided in Raheny, a northern suburb of Dublin.
In 1962, they relocated to Blackpool, where her parents established a musical group called ‘The Singing Nolans’ (later renamed as The Nolans), featuring their six daughters, including Linda.

The Nolan sisters performed constantly in nightclubs, on TV shows, and on tours to support their family. Their father, also their manager, used to wait at the bar during shows and drive them home late, even on school nights.
In 1979, Linda met tour manager Brian Hudson. They soon fell in love and got married in 1981 despite their parents’ concerns about their 13-year age gap; Brian Hudson worked as The Nolans’ tour manager until 1983.

In 1981, Linda joined her sister Coleen Nolan as part of the ‘Young & Moody Band’ and contributed to the track ‘Don’t Do That.’ The song, which peaked at No. 63 on the UK charts, also featured iconic musicians Lemmy and Cozy Powell.

Linda parted ways with The Nolans in December 1983. Soon after, she earned the nickname ‘Naughty Nolan’ for her bold and provocative publicity pictures, which drew significant attention.

Linda appeared as a panellist on many television shows including BBC1’s ‘Blankety Blank’ (1984-1989), Channel 5’s ‘Big Brother’s Bit on the Side’ (2012-2014), Channel 5’s ‘The Wright Stuff’ (2018), and Channel 5’s ‘Jeremy Vine’ (2018-2019).

Linda played the titular role in the theatrical production Maggie May’s (1986-1993) at Central Pier, Blackpool. She performed in the play for eight consecutive summer seasons, completing over 1,000 shows.

Linda’s financial troubles began when she left a project with a cheque for £13,000, but shortly after, a tax bill for the same amount arrived.
In 1995, Linda and Brian were declared bankrupt. However, things got better when a newspaper paid Linda £17,000 to share her life stories.
Linda worked in many other plays such as ‘Prison Governor’ in Prisoner Cell Block H: The Musical (1996-1997), ‘Mrs. Johnstone’ in Blood Brothers (2000-2008), the Soap Star in Menopause The Musical (2015-2016), and ‘Madame Holly Spencer’ in Rumpy Pumpy! (2016).

Years after Tommy Nolan died in 1998 at age 78, it was revealed in Anne’s 2008 biography that he had abused her while also struggling with alcoholism and violence. Linda later talked about it in an interview and said that it must have been very difficult for Anne since everyone had adored their father.

In 2005, Linda Nolan was diagnosed with breast cancer. In 2006, she underwent a single mastectomy surgery.
The Nolans came together as a “five-piece” to perform their song ‘I’m in the Mood for Dancing’ on two notable occasions. The first was for BBC One’s ‘All Time Greatest Party Songs,’ which aired on 17 December 2005.

In 2007, Linda was diagnosed with cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection, and lymphedema, a condition causing swelling due to fluid build-up in her arm.
The Nolans reunited again for a performance on ITV’s chat show ‘Loose Women’ on 9 August 2007.
On 21 September 2007, Linda’s husband, Brian Hudson, passed away due to liver failure.
In 2009, Linda joined her sisters Bernie, Maureen, and Coleen for a UK and Ireland tour, which turned out to be successful. Alongside the tour, they released the album ‘I’m in the Mood Again,’ which ranked No. 22 on the UK Albums Chart.

Although Linda was declared cancer-free in 2011, her health took a turn in 2017 after she fell on her hip. After being hospitalised, doctors discovered that she had developed incurable secondary breast cancer in her pelvis.
Linda later started receiving regular radiotherapy to prevent cancer from spreading. However, she said she would avoid chemotherapy if the cancer was terminal, as she had seen her sister Bernie suffer from its painful side effects before Bernie passed away in 2013.
In 2014, Linda’s financial issues resurfaced when she was investigated by Blackpool Council and the Department for Work and Pensions for claiming £12,000 in benefits while working. Linda, however, did not realise quick TV interviews counted as “work.” She created a repayment plan and was later issued a caution.
In 2014, Linda joined ‘Celebrity Big Brother 13’ as a contestant reportedly because she needed the money.

While in the show ‘Celebrity Big Brother 13,’ she shared her personal stories and clashed with comedian Jim Davidson, a conflict that started in the 90s when her husband, Brian, stole money from Jim’s friend, comedian Frank Carson.
In July 2014, Linda revealed that she had been a victim of sexual assault by musician and television personality Rolf Harris during a 1975 tour in South Africa, where The Nolans were performing as his supporting act.
In March 2018, Linda authored an autobiography called ‘From My Heart.’

In 2020, Linda’s cancer spread to her liver. By 27 March 2023, it had reached her brain, causing a tumour and balance issues on her right side, which led her to use a wheelchair. She began treatment with the experimental drug tucatinib, followed by enhertu.
Linda devoted herself to supporting cancer causes. She played a key role in raising more than £20 million for organisations such as Breast Cancer Now, the Irish Cancer Society, and Samaritans, among many others.
Linda was admitted to Blackpool Victoria Hospital due to double pneumonia in January 2025. On 15 January, she passed away at the age of 65.
Linda consumed alcohol occasionally.
