Leela Mishra was a veteran Indian actress, who featured in more than 200 films for Hindi cinema. She was popular for playing the roles of “Chachi’s and Mausi’s” in Bollywood films. Her most prominent role for which she is still remembered was of “Mausiji” in Sholay (1975).
Leela Mishra belonged to a conservative family of “zamindars.” Her Husband, Ram Prasad Mishra, was a character artist, who worked in silent movies. In 1934, she moved to Bombay with her husband.
Leela Mishra was married at the age of 12 and she gave birth to two daughters at the age of 17.
Mama Shinde, who worked with Dada Phalke’s Nasik Cinetone, discovered Leela Mishra and enquired if, she was interested to act in films.
Due to the shortage of actresses in earlier days, Leela Mishra was paid five hundred rupees per month whereas, her husband was paid one hundred fifty rupees only.
Leela Mishra and her husband were offered to play the role of Mandodari and Ravan in Sati Sulochana (1934). But their inexperience led to their contracts being canceled.
Later on, a distributor from Kolhapur Cinetone, owned by the Maharaja of Kolhapur, saw something in her asked, if she wanted to work in movies and she went on to sign a contract with them.
She was offered a role in the film BhikaÂrin (1935), where she was asked to put an arm around her co-actor to which she opposed due to her traditional and conservative beliefs.
She was cast as lead actor in Gangavataran (1937) as Parvati that was her first big role and the film turned out to be a success.
Leela Mishra played the character of the mother for the first time in Honhar (1936), where she was cast as the heroine but refused to hug and embrace his co-actor in the movie as per script. Later, she was re-casted as a mother in the film.
She moved to Calcutta in 1940 and worked in three films, which were Fazli Brothers’ Qaidi, Kidar Sharma’s Chitralekha, and R. C. Talwar’s Khamoshi.
Kisi Se Na Kehna (1942), was a big hit at the box office and she became a known face for portraying motherly roles in the industry and after that, there was no looking back.
Her performance in Satyajit Ray’s Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977) was one her finest and, is widely acclaimed by the audience. She did not even charge any payments for this film.
Leela Mishra didn’t like to watch movies in theatres. In an interview, while talking about this, she said,-
What for? Why waste money on cabs and tickets and sit in a stuffy theatre through the whole painful process of watching those flashes of brilliance? Don’t I know I am a three-scene actress. I prefer to spend my money and energy on good food, good neighbors, and good literature, that is the Ramayan.”
