Some Lesser Known Facts About L. Murugan
In 1997, while in college, L. Murugan was inspired by Hindutva ideas and joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Later, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
After completing his formal education, he practised as a lawyer for 15 years. He then served as the Standing Counsel for the Government of India at the Madras High Court.
As a lawyer, L. Murugan has represented the BJP in various cases.
He is fluent in English, Tamil, and Telugu languages.
In the 2011 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, L. Murugan contested from the Rasipuram constituency on a BJP ticket but received 1800 votes.
His parents live in a small roofed house near Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. The couple are daily wage earners. They work in the fields. In 2016, after his elder brother died, his parents took care of his widowed sister-in-law and nephew.

In 2017, L. Murugan was appointed as the national general secretary of the Scheduled Caste (SC) division of the RSS. He served in the position till 2020.
During the same period, he served as the vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC).Ā He resigned from the NCSC before his term ended and met senior BJP leaders.
L. Murugan then served as the BJP in charge in Kerala for some time.
In 2017, during protests against NEET in Tamil Nadu, he claimed in a media talk that āexternal forcesā were involved in the suicide of S. Anitha. He supported NEET.
In January 2020, L. Murugan claimed in a media conversation that there was an increase in love jihad in Tamil Nadu.
On 12 March 2020, he was appointed as the chief of the BJP Tamil Nadu unit and the first Dalit to hold this position.
L. Murugan supported the Citizenship (Amendment) Act of 2019.
In 2020, he led the BJPās Vel Yatra twice to promote Hindutva politics in Tamil Nadu. However, he was arrested both times. During the same time, Puducherryās Chief Minister, V Narayanasamy, said that the Vel Yatra was an attempt by the BJP to cause communal disharmony among the citizens.

In December 2020, L. Murugan called the Indian farmersā protest in Delhi āfalse propaganda.ā
He contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections from the Dharapuram constituency and lost to DMKās candidate N. Kayalvizhi by 1,393 votes.

On 7 July 2021, during the Cabinet reshuffle, L. Murugan was sworn in as the Minister of State for the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
He is the first person from the Arunthathiyar community to have become a union minister since independence.
In October 2021, L. Murugan claimed that āvested interestsā were behind the 2020-2021 Indian farmersā protest in northern states.
He is a member of the Rajya Sabha and represents Madhya Pradesh.
In 2023, L. Murugan was invited to the Cannes Film Festival. He walked the red carpet and led the Indian delegation at the film festival. He inaugurated the India Pavilion at Cannes.
