In 1990, Kunwar Vijay Shah was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Madhya Pradesh.
After that, he went on to win every election from the Harsud constituency, such as in 1993, 1998, 2003, 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023.

In the third government of Shivraj Singh Chouhan , he served as the School Education Minister.
Kunwar Vijay Shah then served as the Forest Minister in the fourth government of Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
He has also held other positions such as Minister for Tribal Affairs, Tourism, Public Asset Management, Panchayat Raj, and Rural Development.
In 2013, his elder brother Ajay Shah joined the Congress party with the support of State Congress President Arun Yadav.
In 2013, after resigning from the Madhya Pradesh Cabinet for making sexist comments about then-Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s wife, Kunwar Vijay Shah was brought back into the Cabinet later because he was seen as an important tribal leader in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Reportedly, 21% of Madhya Pradesh’s population are tribal voters, who could influence the election results in 47 out of 230 Assembly seats.

In 2015, he was in the news for making a unique offer to people in the Harsud constituency. He announced that people could take a selfie with him by paying ten rupees.
He got the idea from Queen Elizabeth II’s daughter, Princess Anne, who used to charge for photos and handshakes. Shah said that the money collected would be spent on building a Tribal Old Age Home in Harsud in 2016.
He also clarified that even those who could not pay the money were still welcome to take a selfie with him.
In 2018, he commented and targeted the transgender community during a political rally.
In 2022, during a speech, Kunwar Vijay Shah criticised past Indian prime ministers for not looking after the poor population of India. He called the previous prime ministers “ghoda, ghada, and haathi chhaap.” He said that they were useless and did not care for the poor.
He said that in the 75 years since India’s Independence, only Prime Minister Narendra Modi had worked to improve the lives of the poor in India.

In 2022, Kunwar Vijay Shah made a comment aimed at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi . He said
He is 55-56 years old and still not married. My son is 28 and already married. In a family, if a child is unmarried at 25, neighbours start asking questions.”
During his period as the Education Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shah made a rule in all schools that the students should respond to roll call with Jai Hind.
In 2023, Kunwar Vijay Shah competed in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly election from the Harsud constituency on the ticket of the Bharatiya Janata Party and won.
He received 1,16,580 votes and defeated his opponent and Congress candidate Sukhram Salve by 59,996 votes.
In July 2024, Kunwar Vijay Shah warned that the schools and madrasas that did not play the national anthem could lose government funding. This warning was seen as a threat to minority institutions.
In December 2024, Shah faced criticism from wildlife activists, and an investigation was started against him after a video showed him having a picnic inside the core zone of Satpura Tiger Reserve.
In the video, Kunwar Vijay Shah was seen standing on a forest tower with two men cooking non-vegetarian food nearby. He was heard saying,
Today’s is the real picnic. It is a great one.”

On 13 May 2025, during a political event in Mhow, he commented on India’s military action against those behind the Pahalgam terror attack, which happened on 22 April 2025.
Kunwar Vijay Shah said that the public briefing of the Operation Sindoor was done through “their community’s sister” and repeated the comment three times during his speech.
The Congress party claimed in the media that he was referring to Colonel Sophia Qureshi  and criticised the remark.
Later, Kunwar Vijay Shah clarified that the statement was not said in the wrong way and expressed that the women of the country, along with the armed forces, had taken revenge with great strength.
