  • Kishori Lal Sharma’s family originally hails from Bhawanipur village in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

  • His father owned a bakery business in Malerkotla. When Kishori Lal was too young his family moved to Ludhiana, Punjab, and got settled there.

  • While he was studying in college, he became active in student politics by joining the Youth Congress.

  • After completing his graduation, Kishori Lal moved to Delhi, where he came in touch with Rajiv Gandhi , who took him to Amethi in 1983 as a Youth Congress representative. While talking about it in an interview, Kishori Lal said,

    A programme was launched by Rajiv Gandhi under which fresh graduates who believed in the Congress ideology underwent training. A few were handpicked and sent to different parts of the country and assigned the duty of building cadre and monitor the 20-point programme of then PM Indira Gandhi. I worked for a few months in Madhya Pradesh. Later, a camp was held in 1983 in which 400 boys from all over the country participated and a potential team of 10 was chosen. I was one among them. We were given the responsibility of Amethi. I was 22 years old and was made in charge of one-and-a-half blocks. This is how my journey in Amethi began.”

  • While he was still in his 20s, Kishori was made in charge of the Tiloi Assembly constituency under the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. He was also made the coordinator of the Youth Congress.

  • During the 1989 Lok Sabha elections, Kishori Lal Sharma worked closely with Rajiv Gandhi, who contested the elections from the Amethi constituency.

  • He was also part of Rajiv’s team in Amethi during the 1989 and 1991 Lok Sabha elections.

  • His ties with the Gandhi family more familial after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in May 1991.

  • Post Rajiv’s death, Kishori Lal worked in the team of Captain Satish Sharma, who contested the 1991 by-polls in Amethi. He also worked for Sanjay Singh in Amethi during the 1998 Lok Sabha elections; he was the key man who looked after the Amethi and Rae Bareli constituencies during the absence of the Gandhis.

  • Sharma has worked towards improving infrastructure, including roads, bridges, schools, and healthcare facilities in Amethi and Raebareli. He has also worked towards getting better connectivity in the regions.

  • Reportedly in 2014, Rahul Gandhi expressed his desire to have his own team in Amethi and after this, Sharma only concentrated on the campaigning of Rae Bareli. Many of the party leaders considered it to be one of the reason’s for party’s fall in Amethi. Talking about it, a Congress leader said,

    The fact remains that the Congress’s victory margins in Amethi were high till the time Sharma was managing the polls, and dropped drastically by 2 lakh when he left, though there were other factors as well. Plus, Rae Bareli (which Sharma continued to manage) has been retained by the party.”

  • Actively campaigning or Amethi for years, Kishori Lal has been included in the list of star campaigners of the Congress Party in UP in the Lok Sabha elections.

  • Besides Uttar Pradesh, Kishori Lal has also worked for the Indian National Congress in Bihar and Punjab. He once served as the AICC secretary in-charge of Bihar.
