Some Lesser Known Facts About Kedarnath Aggarwal

  • Kedarnath Aggarwal (1937-2023) was an Indian businessman who founded the popular sweet and namkeen brands Bikanervala and Bikano and also served as its chairman. He died in November 2023.

  • During his initial teenage years, he started working at his father’s sweet shop ā€˜Bikaner Mithai Bhandar’ in Bikaner which was opened in 1905. He later toured Mumbai and Kolkata with his brother Satya Narayan Aggarwal before arriving in Delhi in 1955, where they started selling sweets and bhujia as a street vendor. They used to pack the Bikaneri rasgullas and bhujia in paper packets, put them in a bucket, and sell them on the streets.

  • Kedarnath Aggarwal talked about an incident from his earliest days in Delhi in an interview and mentioned that only a 3-day stay was permitted in Santlal Khemka Dharamshala in Delhi; however, they were able to stay in the Dharamshala for one month as they carried a letter from one of their known persons of Bikaner.

  • After selling the sweets on the streets for a few months, they opened a shop Paranthe Wali Gali in the Chandni Chowk area of Delhi, India which they named Bikaneri Bhujia Bhandar. Once, their elder brother Jugal Kishore came to Delhi and visited their shop; however, he became angry with them and said that they were sent to Delhi to spread the fame of Bikaner following which they named their shop Bikanervala.

  • Over time, many sweets in their shop such as Moong Dal Halwa, Bikaneri Bhujia, and Kaju Katli became popular among the public. They later opened many shops in other parts of Delhi and various cities in India and other countries.

  • He created a new brand Bikano in 1988 under which they sold namkeens and other sweets in air-tight packets. In 1995, they teamed up with Lehar, a new brand of PepsiCo, to sell their products. The brands, Bikanervala and Bikano, were later managed by Shyam Sundar Aggarwal and his son, Manish Aggarwal. It was reported in 2023 that there were more than 150 national and international outlets of Bikanervala and has a yearly income of more than Rs 2000 crores.

Bikanervala’s founder sh Kedarnath aggarwal passed away yesterday, man sold bhujiya and samosa in buckets in Chandni Chowk before opening a small shop in Chandni Chowk. Today bikanervala is present in multiple counties and has 60 outlets in India. What a legend.
