Some Lesser Known Facts About Kapil Raj
After completing his formal education, Kapil Raj passed the UPSC exam in 2008. After that, he was assigned to the Customs and Central Excise (C&CE) department.
He worked for some years in his parent cadre and then joined the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Mumbai Zonal office as Deputy Director.
While working in Mumbai, Kapil Raj handled many important cases. One key case was the Punjab National Bank fraud, which involved well-known fugitives Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi .
He worked with the ED for about eight years.
In 2022, Kapil Raj was transferred to Delhi and got promoted to the position of Joint Director. He took charge of the Headquarters Investigation Unit (HIU) in Delhi.
He was also responsible for cases in Jharkhand, where he worked on important cases like the West Bengal coal scam, which involved TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee .
After that, Kapil Raj was the main officer investigating the arrests of two chief ministers related to anti-money laundering laws.
One case involved the former Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal , regarding the excise policy.
The other case involved former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with a land scam.
Kapil Raj was also the main officer investigating the cases related to DHFL and Iqbal Mirchi.
Reportedly, he used to write the questions for interrogations himself. He often watched over ED raids to encourage his team.

Kapil Raj worked as an Additional Commissioner in the GST Intelligence wing in Delhi.
In July 2025, he came into the limelight after he left his government job. He had worked in government for about 16 years before quitting.
Kapil Raj said that he left the job for ‘personal reasons.’ During the time of resignation, he still had about 15 years left to work before the retirement age of 60.
In July 2025, he finished his assignment with the federal anti-money laundering agency.
After that, Kapil Raj joined Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).
