Some Lesser Known Facts About Kapil Parmar
In childhood, Kapil Parmar suffered a severe electric shock after he accidentally touched a water pump.
A villager found him unconscious and took him to a hospital in Bhopal, where he stayed in a coma for six months.
The immediate effect of the shock was that his fingers got stuck together. Over time, his vision worsened. Kapil Parmar has very limited eyesight, even with high-powered glasses.
He loved to play judo during his school days.

After his recovery, doctors advised him to gain weight so that he could participate in judo professionally.
During this time, Kapil Parmar learned about blind judo and was encouraged to pursue the game by his mentors, Bhagwan Das and Manoj.
Kapil and his brother used to run a tea stall to support themselves. His brother Lalit continued working on the tea stall to financially support Kapil.
He trains with coach Munawar Anzar Ali Siddiqui at the Indian Blind and Para Judo Academy in Lucknow.
His middle brother, who also practices judo, often trains with him.
Kapil Parmar started participating in judo championships in 2017 after learning about the sport’s blind category.

He became famous in 2018 after winning a gold medal at the national championships.
In 2019, Kapil Parmar achieved the top position at the Commonwealth Championship in Birmingham.
On 5 September 2024, he made history by winning India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in judo at the Paris Games. He defeated Brazil’s Elielton de Oliveira with an ‘Ippon’ (10-0 margin) in the men’s 60kg J1 bronze medal playoff.

Kapil Parmar is the first blind Indian judo athlete to qualify for the Paralympics.
He receives financial assistance for training, competition, and an out-of-pocket allowance under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) in India.
