Some Lesser Known Facts About Kanwarjit Paintal
Kanwarjit Paintalâs family was based in Lahore, Pakistan, from where his father relocated to India and settled in Punjab where Paintal was born.
Since his childhood days, Kanwarjit Paintal always wanted to entertain people.
During his school days, he used to be part of a theatre group called âPanorama Theatreâ which was started by one of his school teachers. Sometimes he also used to clean the theatre.
During his childhood days, Paintalâs father used to shoot movies for his own interest on an 8mm camera in which Paintal used to act. After watching his acting, Paintalâs father suggested that he should pursue acting.
Before choosing acting as a career, Kanwarjit wanted to become a naval aviation officer as he belonged to an army background because all his uncles were retired army generals.
His aunt (Kanwarjitâs motherâs sister) suggested Kanwarjitâs father to get Kanwarjit admitted into the FTII to learn acting and his father agreed.
Kanwarjit Paintal was never a bright student hence, when he was about to go to the FTII, his father came to drop him to the railway station and said

These words of his father changed Kanwarjitâs life.
During his time in FTII, he was given training on how to act like a mime which is a theatrical technique of suggesting action, character, or emotion without words. Paintal used to secretly practice his lessons on the terrace of his hostel at night when nobody could see him.
Jaya Bachchan was Kanwarjit Paintalâs junior at the FTII, Pune.
Jaya Bachchan gave him the nickname âBuntyâ when they both were studying in FTII.
While he was pursuing his acting course in Pune, he was invited to perform a mime act in the Poona Club where he charged Rs. 50 for his performance. That was Kanwarjit Paintalâs first ever earning.
He handed his first earnings to his mother and she kept those 50 rupees till her last breath.
The Indian actor Om Prakash saw Paitalâs mime act at the Poona Club and told Paintal that he was his first fan.
After 3 months of training at the FTII, one day, he received a telegram from his father saying that he had lost his job and he could not afford to pay Paintalâs fees anymore.
On the same day of receiving the telegram from his father, Paintal was notified that the FTII had decided to grant him a monthly stipend of 75 rupees for being the best student of the first year.
He quit non-vegetarian as it would cost him more money which he couldnât afford as he used to pay his own college fees.
In 1969, Kanwarjit Paintal moved to Mumbai to pursue his career in acting.
In 1971, Paintal was cast in the Hindi drama film titled âLal Pattharâ in which he played the role of Chhotu.
Indian film director Roshan Taneja was the mentor and teacher of Paintal at the FTII, Pune.
In 1976, Paintal was appointed as a teacher for mime classes at the Roshan Taneja School of Acting in Mumbai.
Kanwarjit Paintal has taught acting to many Indian actors including Anil Kapoor , Gulshan Grover , Jaideep Ahlawat , and Rajkummar Rao .
In 1985, he was cast in the Indian TV series titled âVikram Aur Betaalâ the concept of which was based on Baital Pachisi, a collection of tales. Paintal played the role of Dagdoo. The series was aired on DD National.

In 1988, Kanwarjit Paintal was cast in the Hindi-language television series titled âMahabharatâ which was based on the ancient Sanskrit epic Mahabharata. He played the role of Shikhandi and adult Sudama. Kanwarjitâs brother Gufi played the role of Shakuni in the series.

In 2005, Kanwarjit Paintal was appointed as the head of the acting department of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
In 2023, his elder brother and actor Gufi Paintal passed away after a prolonged illness and Kanwarjit was very close to him. He said in an interview that âI love youâ were the last words of his brother to him before he passed away.
Kanwarjit Paintal owns a production house named âPaintal Productions.â
Kanwarjit Paintal has been part of many Hindi films including âAaj Ki Taaza Khabarâ (1973) as Champak Boomia, âSatte Pe Sattaâ (1982) as Budh Anand, âJaisi Karni Waisi Bharni (1989) as Maganlal, and âKahani Rubberband Kiâ (2022) as a Judge.

Kanwarjit Paintal has been part of many Hindi TV series including âShakti â Astitva Ke Ehsaas Kiâ (2016) as Baksh Singh on Colors TV, âKabhi Kabhie Ittefaq Seyâ (2022) as Charudutt Kulshresta on StarPlus, and âMehndi Wala Gharâ (2024) as Hari Agarwal on Sony Entertainment Television channel.
