Rahul Gandhi was seen recording the video when Kalyan made fun of Dhankar's physical limitations. Later, lawyer Abhishek Gautam lodged a complaint at the Defence Colony Police Station, accusing Kalyan of defaming and insulting the Vice-President of India, his caste, and his farming background. He requested that an FIR be registered against the TMC MP under the relevant sections of the IPC and the IT Act. Later, Dhankar addressed the issue in the parliament and said, "As an individual, take on me, donāt take on my background as a farmer, donāt take on my background as a community member. Some Lesser Known Facts About Kalyan Banerjee
After completing an LLB degree, he started practising as a lawyer at the Calcutta High Court in 1981.
In 1991, he ventured into politics by joining the Indian National Congress. He served as the chairman of the West Bengal Youth Congress till 1997.
In 2004, he was recognised as one of the senior advocates of the Calcutta High Court.

In October 2009, he visited the U.K. and the U.S.A. as a delegate of the Parliamentary Team of the United General Assembly.
On 31 August 2009, he took charge as the chairman of the Standing Committee on Coal and Steel. He was also assigned the charge of various parliamentary committees such as the Consultative Committee on the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Committee on Privileges, the Joint Parliamentary Committee related to the allocation and pricing of telecom licences and spectrum, the Committee on Subordinate Legislation, the Committee on Ethics, and the Committee on Violation of Protocol Norms and Contemptuous Behavior of Government Officers with Members of Lok Sabha.
