When Kaapo Kakko was five years old, he went to the doctor for a regular checkup. He felt healthy and did not notice anything wrong. However, his blood tests showed that he had type 1 diabetes and celiac disease.
He stayed in the hospital for about a week while doctors watched over him. He then changed his food and daily habits because of his health conditions.

In the 2018-19 season in Finland, he scored 22 goals in 45 games.
On 5 January 2019, Kaapo Kakko scored the winning goal for Finland’s junior team and won a gold medal in the World Junior Championships.
He is the youngest player ever to win gold medals in all three IIHF world championships, U18, Junior, and Senior tournaments.
That same year, Kaapo Kakko played for Finland’s senior team. He led them with six goals and helped them win the world championship.
On 21 June 2019, he was placed second overall by the New York Rangers in the National Hockey League (NHL) draft and was rated as the top European skater.

On 11 July 2019, Kaapo Kakko signed a three-year contract with the New York Rangers and played his first NHL game for the Rangers on 3 October 2019.
He scored his first NHL goal on 12 October 2019, against the Edmonton Oilers, and became the eighth player in Rangers history to score a goal at the age of 18 or younger.
Kaapo Kakko also became the second person born in the 21st century to score an NHL goal, a few hours after Ville Heinola did the same for the Winnipeg Jets.
His first contract with the New York Rangers ended in 2022. He then renewed his two-year contract, worth $4.2 million, with the team on 28 July 2022.
On 13 June 2024, Kaapo Kakko signed a one-year, $2.4 million contract with the Rangers.
