In September 2023, K Ramachandra Rao began working as the head of the Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation.

On 3 March 2025, his stepdaughter and actress, Ranya Rao, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) at Bengaluru Airport after arriving from Dubai. The officials found gold bars worth Rs. 12.56 crore with her.
The next day, the DRI found gold jewellery worth Rs. 2.06 crore and cash worth Rs. 2.67 crore at her home in Bengaluru.
K Ramachandra Rao was accused of using police escorts to avoid Customs checks at the airport.
After her arrest, the state government formed a committee led by Additional Chief Secretary Gaurav Gupta to check if K Ramachandra Rao was involved in the smuggling.
K Ramachandra Rao then appeared before the committee for questioning.
On 12 August 2025, the Karnataka government gave K Ramachandra Rao his position back and appointed him the Director General of Police (DGP) for the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.

Ranya Rao was arrested in a gold smuggling case in March 2025.
The government also cancelled its earlier order that had sent K Ramachandra Rao on compulsory leave in March 2025.
He was sent on leave soon after Ranya Rao’s arrest.
During a media conversation, he said that he was shocked when he learned about the incident from the media. He was not aware of any of these things before, and like any other father, he was also surprised. He added that Ranya Rao lived with her husband, and there might be some issues between them due to family problems. K Ramachandra Rao said,
The law will do its job. There is no black mark on my career.”
