  • K. M. Nanavati was a Senior Commander with the Indian Navy and was settled in Mumbai with his wife and children.

  • He frequently used to go for voyages regarding his official assignments.

  • His wife was a British woman and met him in England, where Nanavati lived during the days of his naval training.

  • On 27 April 1959, when he came back from his voyage, he found something amiss about his wife and asked her about it. Later, she confessed about her affair with Prem Ahuja, the Sindhi Businessman of Bombay.

  • As per a report, he, on the very same day, dropped his wife and children to the ‘Metro Cinema,’ a movie theatre and went to a Naval Base in Mumbai, from where he had picked his service pistol.

  • After the Naval Base, he went to his flat where he shot him thrice on his chest.

    Story of his Case Covered by Blitz

  • After murdering the businessman, he unloaded his gun and went to the Provost Marshal of the Western Naval Command to surrender himself. After which, the police has taken him into his custody for several trials.

  • Prem Ahuja’s sister, Mamie Ahuja, filed a case against him for murdering her brother.

  • The real story after he got acquitted by getting 8-1 votes from the jury, the judge declared the decision as a perverted action and referred the case to the Bombay High Court, which sentenced Nanavati to life imprisonment. He was then pardoned after three years, by the then governor of Maharashtra, Vijaylakshmi Pandit, on account of ethnic-political machinations.

  • After he got pardoned by the then Governor, he left the country and got settled with his wife and children in Ontario, Canada.

  • A Tabloid named, Blitz, had covered all the updates of his case and had played an important role in framing the sympathetical story in the brains of the common people. At that time, a copy of Blitz sold for 2 rupees per copy, which raised up from the normal rate of 25 paise.

  • Once a newspaper, Hindustan Times, also tried to contact him, but he denied to recall his memory about the case and refused to his meeting with the newspaper by writing a letter.
