| Controversies | Cash Row Controversy On 14 March 2025, Justice Yashwant Verma came into a controversy after substaintial amount of half-burnt Indian currency was recovered from his residence's storeroom after a fire broke out at his residence. After the incident, his judicial duties of the Delhi Hight Court were withdrawn. Some Lesser Known Facts About Justice Yashwant Verma
Yashwant Verma enrolled as an advocate at the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh on 8 August 1992.
As an advocate at the Allahabad High Court, Yashwant practised varied nature of matters relating to Constitutional, Labour and Industrial Legislations, Corporate Laws, Taxation, Environment, and Allied Branches of Law.
In 2006, he was appointed as the Special Counsel for the Allahabad High Court.
In 2012, Verma was appointed as the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of U.P. He held the office till August 2013.
In 2013, Yashwant Verma was designated as a Senior Advocate by the Allahabad High Court.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on 13 October 2014.
On 1 February 2016, Yashwant took aoth as the Permanent Judge of Allahabad High Court.
He was transferred as a judge to the Delhi High Court on 11 October 2021.
Yashwant has given judgements on crucial areas of law including taxation, intellectual property, firearms regulations, and constitutional rights.
On the night of 14 March 2025, fire broke out at Justice Yashwant Verma’s residential bungalow in Delhi.
Apparently, Justice Verma was not in Delhi at that time and his daughter, who was inside the house with his aged grandmother, informed the police officials and fire brigade about the incident.
After the fire was doused, the officials found 4-5 half-burnt sacks of Indian currency in Verma’s storeroom.
After the incident, a three-member committee was formed by the Supreme Court chaired by Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, alongside Justice GS Sandhawalia of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and Justice Anu Sivaraman of the Karnataka High Court to look into the matter.
On 21 March 2025, after an adverse report against Yashwant, the Supreme Court Collegium headed by the Chief Justice of India, Sanjiv Khanna , ordered the transfer of Justice Verma to his parent court Allahabad High Court.
CJI Khanna also barred him from performing any judicial duties till the probe was pending against him.
Justice Verma denied all the allegations and said that he did not have any knowledge about the cash found in his bungalow’s storeroom. He also stated that the storeroom was not locked and was accessible to all.
