Some Lesser Known Facts About Justice T. S. Sivagnanam
T. S. Sivagnanam is an Indian justice, who was appointed as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Calcutta on 11 May 2023.
He grew up in a well-to-do family in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
After obtaining a bachelorās degree in law, T. S. Sivagnanam enrolled at the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu on 10 September 1986.

He began his legal practice by joining the Chamber of the senior advocate R. Gandhi.
After 14 years of practice as an advocate, Sivagnanam was appointed as the Additional Standing Counsel of the Central Government.
Subsequently, he served as the Counsel for Southern Railway.
In 2004, Sivagnanam was appointed as the senior panel advocate for Central Government.
Meanwhile, he also served as the Panel Counsel for the All India Council for Technical Education for appearance in the High Court of Judicature at Madras and the High Court of Andhra Pradesh.
In 2007, the Chief Justice of the High Court of Judicature at Madras nominated T. S. Sivagnanam as the panel lawyer for appearing on behalf of the Registrar General/Officers/Judicial Officers.
He then served as the senior panel lawyer for Customs & Central Excise Department.
Sivagnanam also served as the Special Counsel for the Department of Revenue to appear before the CEGAT/CESTAT Chennai.
He was also appointed as the Special Counsel for the Department of Revenue before the Settlement Commission for Customs Cases, Chennai.
On 31 March 2009, T. S. Sivagnanam was appointed as the Additional Judge of the Madras High Court. Two years later, he was elevated as the permanent judge at the Madras High Court.

As a judge of the Madras High Court, T. S. Sivagnanam headed the Computer Committee of the court. Under his leadership during COVID-19, the committee purchased more than 100 āMicrosoftTeamā licenses to virtually carry out the court proceedings in Tamil Nadu.

During his tenure as the Chairman of the Computer Committee, T. S. Sivagnanam introduced the National Service and Tracking of Electronic Process (NSTEP), under which, around 1200 smartphones were bought for the process servers, making the proceedings of the court simple and easy within a short duration of time.
In 2021, Sivagnanam was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, where he was sworn in as a judge on 25 October 2021.

On 9 February 2023, the Supreme Court Collegium recommended Sivagnanamās name as the chief justice of the Calcutta High Court. On 11 May 2023, he was appointed as the 33rd Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court after the central government issued a notice of his appointment.
Before being appointed as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, Sivagnanam was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Calcutta since 31 March 2023. He would serve the position for around two years and retire from his services on 15 September 2025.

Justice T. S. Sivagnanam was once on the Board of Governors of the Tamil Nadu State Judicial Academy (TNSJA).
On 8 April 2019, Justice T. S. Sivagnanam inaugurated the SICCI Centre for ADR at the Indian Chamber Buildings, Esplanade, Chennai.
