Joy Banerjee grew up in Kolkata.
He met a woman named Ananya Banerjee during their college days. They soon fell in love and later got married.
Over time, political differences began to strain their marriage. Ananya joined the Trinamool Congress in 2009, while Joy entered politics in 2014 as a BJP leader. Their opposing affiliations led to their separation.
After the divorce, Joy moved on and married Ankita Banerjee. Ananya, however, chose not to remarry and instead dedicated herself to her work as a politician, social worker, and entrepreneur.
He gained recognition for his performance in the film ‘Chopper’ (1986).
Joy worked in many other films, including ‘Swarga Sukh’ (1986), ‘Hirak Jayanti’ (1990), ‘Pennam Kolkata’ (1992), ‘Jekhane Ashray’ (2009), and ‘Kartiker Biye’ (2010).

In June 2020, Joy Banerjee called for a boycott of Chinese goods and angrily stated that people who continued to use them should be punished.
On 15 August 2025, Joy Banerjee was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after suffering from severe breathing problems. Doctors diagnosed him with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
As his health worsened, Joy was put on ventilator support. He passed away on 25 August 2025.
