Jayshree Gadkar was a popular Indian actress who is best known for portraying “Kaushalya” in Ramanand Sagar ‘s epic television series Ramayan. She is also known for her contribution to the Marathi cinema.
She belonged to a Konkani-speaking family of Maharashtra.
She was very passionate about dancing and acting since her childhood.
She entered the film industry as a child dance artist.
In her debut Bollywood film, V Shantaram’s ‘Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje’ (1955), she appeared as a group dancer alongside leading lady Sandhya.
Jayshree’s next film was Dinkar D Patil’s “Disat Tasa Nasat” in which she appeared in a small role opposite the renowned Marathi actor, Raja Gosavi.
Her first leading role was in the film ‘Sangtye Aika,’ a tamasha-based movie. The film established her as a leading actress in Marathi cinema.
After ‘Sangtye Aika,’ Jayshree went on to deliver several memorable performances in many celebrated movies, such as ‘Aaliya Bhogasi,’ ‘Gath Padli Thaka Thaka,’ ‘Sangtye Aika,’ ‘Avghachi Sansar,’ ‘Mohityanchi Manjula,’ ‘Saadhi Mansa,’ and ‘Manini.’
With her stunning looks and remarkable acting skills, she ruled the Marathi film industry in the ’60s.
After her television debut with Ramanand Sagar ‘s Ramayan (1987), she became one of the most recognizable faces of television. In this epic television series, she played the role of Ram’s mother and Dashrath’s wife, Kaushalya.
In a career span of more than four decades, Jayshree Gadkar acted in about 250 films.

Her breakthrough Marathi film, ‘Sangtey Aika’ (1959), ran for 132 weeks in a theatre, and her dance number in the film became so popular that it’s still considered one of the iconic performances in the industry.

In her career, she worked opposite several celebrated heroes of the ’60s and ’70s, including late Suryakant and Arun Sarnaik.
When Jayshree was signed for the Marathi film “Manini,” many bigwigs in the industry were sceptical about her skills; as she had done mostly ‘tamasha films.’ However, she gave a befitting reply to her critics after bagging a National Award for her performance in the film.
She did only a few Hindi films in her career. She was noticed for her performance in the Hindi film ‘Private Secretary’ (1962) in which she appeared alongside Ashok Kumar . Thereafter, she appeared in ‘Madari,’ ‘Tulsi,’ ‘Vivah,’ ‘Bajrang Bali,’ and ‘Saranga.’
Jayshree also did a Bhojpuri film “Seeta Maiya” (1964).

In Ramanand Sagar ‘s Ramayan, Jayshree Gadkar and her real-life husband, Bal Dhuri , were paired as the on-screen couple where they portrayed Kaushalya and Dashrath, respectively. Even before Ramayan happened, they had already married to each other.

When Ramanand Sagar called Jayshree to his office to offer her Kaushalya’s role, she also brought her husband, Bal Dhuri along with her, and when Sagar saw her husband, he offered her husband two roles – Meghnad’s and Dashrath’s. Bal Dhuri ended up choosing Dashrath’s role.
Most of her films had a rich repertoire of tamasha stories; however, she also did some social issue-based films and love stories in her career.
In the later stage of her career, Jayshree tried her hand in direction, and her directorial efforts include ‘Saasar Maher’ and ‘Ashi Asavi Saasu.’
There is a book titled “Suvarn Nayika Jasyhree Gadkar,” which is based on Jayshree Gadkar’s life. The book has been authored by her husband, Bal Dhuri .
