Controversy In 2002, Srinath became upset when he was asked to take a break by the national selector after the West Indies tour. Later, he went to England, where he started playing county cricket, and during this time the national Indian team was also on a tour to England. In an interview, Srinath expressed his anguish over the issue. He said, "I think before the World Cup, we had toured West Indies Without my knowledge, the selectors told me I had to take a break. Generally, we used to have a talk and then I used to volunteer saying ā€˜look I need a break. But this time they just said ā€˜we’re giving you a break’ and that didn’t go well with me. Obviously, I was a little upset. I didn’t want my career to be played in the hands of anybody." check sources

Some Lesser Known Facts About Javagal Srinath

  • Javagal Srinath is the former Indian opening fast bowler who is widely acclaimed as the first genuine pacer to play for India. He was known for bowling consistently over 150 Kmph speeds throughout his career, troubling batsmen with steep bouncers and deadly accuracy.

  • He started playing cricket at an age of 12. The first time he led his school side was when he was studying in the tenth standard.

  • According to Srinath, while growing up, he never thought of representing the Indian national cricket team.

  • He completed his engineering after seven years of his international debut.

  • In his entire career, the maximum dismissal came in the form of Andrew Hudson, a South African cricketer.

  • He rates Wasim Akram as the best fast bowler during his time. He rates Aravinda de Silva, Ricky Ponting & Brian Lara as the toughest to bowl among the batsmen. Talking about his teammates, he revealed that Rahul Dravid & Sachin Tendulkar were the other toughest batsmen to bowl to during the nets.

  • Not winning the World Cup on a couple of occasions in 1996 & 2003 is considered the most disappointing moment in his cricket career. Reaching the finals of ICC World Cup 2003 was among the best moments.

  • The period between 1996 and 2001 was the golden phase in Srinath’s Test career. He picked 170 wickets in 39 Tests with a strike rate of 55.70.

  • Srinath had got a better record on the flat tracks in India than the seamer-friendly conditions in Australia, New Zealand, and England. He picked 108 wickets in 32 Tests held in India. His bowling average is better than some of the greats like Makhaya Ntini in South Africa, Darren Gough, Andy Caddick, and Dominic Cork in England.

  • His best bowling spell came against South Africa at Motera in 1996-97, when he took 6 for 21 while defending a total of 170 runs. Interestingly, the pitch was slow and was not considered suitable for pacers. Still, he managed to scalp the victims.

  • The iconic spell of 10 for 74 by legendary Anil Kumble against Pakistan in 1999 would not have been possible if Srinath had not shown his selflessness attitude. He bowled wide of off-stump in the previous over deliberately, giving a chance to Kumble to get that tenth wicket.

  • He has also got a better strike rate than most of the prolific fast bowlers in cricket like Curtly Ambrose, Shaun Pollock, and Chaminda Vaas. Not only this, but his bowling average is also better than Lasith Malinga , Brett Lee , and Jason Gillespie.

  • He became the third-highest wicket-taker in ODIs during the 90s. Only behind Akram and Waqar where he managed to pick 237 wickets in 174 matches.

  • He is one of the most soft-spoken men on the field. Once, his bouncer hit Stephen Fleming on his helmet after which he muttered some words. Fleming responded in anger catching Srinath off-guard as he was just asking if the batsman was okay.

  • He was renowned for his batting skills as well. He batted in top-5 on 12 occasions and scored four Test fifties and one ODI fifty with the highest score of 76.Ā

  • Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly are the only batsmen with whom Srinath registered 100 runs partnership as a batsman.

  • Over time, his pace dropped a bit as he started to focus more on swings and cutters, which he disguised cleverly in ODIs. Despite the emergence of young pacers like Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan & Ashish Nehra , he was still considered one of the crucial bowlers for India. His contribution was significant in taking India to the finals of the 2003 ICC World Cup.

  • Shivnarine Chanderpaul was his last international wicket.

  • Post-retirement, he worked as a TV commentator. Later on, in 2006, he became a member of the ICC match referee panel.
